SOMETIMES YOU get a coach who never sits down, others get up and down, some like to yell at officials ganizations for community integrity and opportunity referred to as S.O.L.I.O. j Weber and Davis chapters constantly, others are quiet about almost everything. Two of the exact opposites met last Saturday in the 3A title contest George Sluga of Bingham and Gary Allred L of Pleasant Grove. SLUGA, THE head man of the Miners, is the type of coach who never sits down. He was always running up and down shouting instructions and orders to his team.j He loves to get emotionally involved in the contest to the point he could be classified as a cheerleader. Allred on the other extreme is the cool and calm type of coach who sits back and watches and observes and then gives his instructions and orders during the time out. Lancers, the Lakers have started a rumor of their own. NOT ONLY do the Lancers have a potent scorer in the middle in Gilbert but they also have a fine outside shoot- ing attack led by unsung Carl praise when they deserve it. Certainly this year all the coaches in the area have done a fine job with their teams and each should be congratulated, dw The Darts Weren't Supposed To Make State Meet Woodward. THE tournament was conducted at the Layton National Guard Armory with 16 teams participating from as far south as Bountiful and as far north as North Ogden. The first place team in the tournament was Kaysville after battling a close game with Centerville, who ended up in second place. Third place was won by Walquist .with fourth place going to Central Davis. Consolation was awarded to Mt. Ogden. WE WOULD like to express our upmost appreciation to all the coaches and their teams who participated in the tournament this year. The Lancers displayed a great deal of poise and patience in this outing. They never hurried on offense as they worked the ball around looking for the lob inside to Gilbert. Not bad for a team that wasnt even supposed to make the trip. It was probably a fitting ending to the year that the Darts had to go into overtime to win the fourth spot. This year has been the year for the close games for Coach; Gardner and his troops. THE FINAL game was also sweet for the Darts as they beat their old nemesis, American Fork. In the past two years these two teams locked horns for the title both winning once, this was a kind of rubber match. Anytime a Davis team can beat the Cavemen, they like it. In the opening round of the the Darts tournament, barely got by a stubborn Cedar team. In this game it was the inside work of senior Bob Payne that was the difference as the Cedar team never could stop the seniors shots. NEXT CAME the only loss of the tournament for the Darts as they hit the Bingham express. Bingham eventually won the title. In this game the Darts couldnt buy a bucket, while the Miners hit everything they threw up. In the third round the Darts showed their class as they bounced back from their loss and handed Springville their second loss and sent them home from the tourney. AGAIN IT was the work of Payne that was the difference although he did get great support from Steve Criddle, Pat Benton and Jim Hess. Then in Saturdays bout with the Cavemen it was Payne again leading the way. Bob had one of the best tournaments of any forward. He will definitely have to get some consideration for post season honors with his efforts.
