Show i I WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- t NEWS JOURNAL. FEBRUARY 3, 1977 IS Ocami Adit by ROSELYN KIRK The Utah Indoor Clean Air Act, which was passed, but not adequately funded by the 1976 Legislature, may have more teeth in it due to the efforts of Davis County officials. RICHARD HARVEY, administrator of Environmental Health in Davis County and Dr. Richard Johns, director of Public Health pushed to have a bill to fund the act sponsored by Douglas Sonn-- 1 tag, Davis legislator from District 57. Rep. Sonntag said the Clean Air Act, which prohibits smoking in public places, gave citizens the law but provided no manpower to enforce the law. The Act charged the Utah State Division of Health with the responsibility of enforcing the Hew Employee For Layton City Recently employed by Lay-to- n City is Jane Fraley who has replaced Joyce Buckley. IN DECEMBER, a letter was sent to the ten legislators m the county asking them for support. Paine iratoire Cia) Senator Haven Barlow expressed an interest in the bill and suggested that it be drafted by the Legislative Legal Council. After be- ing drafted. Rep. Sonntag agreed to sponsor the bill and read it in the House of Representatives. The bill will go to the Rules Committee, chaired by Rep. Sonntag. Davis County health officials are hopeful it will reach the floor of the house early next week. The Clean Air Act m Utah is patterned after a similar act in Michigan. Mr. Harvey said have been similar laws enacted in New York, Arizona and San Diego, Calif. MR. HARVEY says he feels quite optimistic about the passage of the bill since lobbying efforts have resulted m the support of local health boards. Rep. This means 256,128 packs were sold each day during the year. MR. HARVEY said, Apparently the State favors enforcement of the Clean Air Act, but Davis County Health Department as well as other health departments do not currently have the manpower to enforce the legislation."
