Show w WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- IS NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 3. 1977 P Rtf Ilf Kddui Now that the Vikings have claimed the King of the Hill honors they will be very reluctant to give it up. What Does A Coach Hope To Achieve? WITH THEIR convincing victory at Layton last Friday the Vikes took over sole possession of top place in the region wars and a win this week against Clearfield would put the Vikes m the drivers Just what does a coach hope to achieve when he schedules his preseason basketball slate seat. Each week the Vikes have had to solve one problem after another, first it was the heighth of Ben Lomond, then the rebounding ability of Ogden. Next up was the rivalry with Bountiful and last week it was the inside attack of the SOME COACHES gp for the soft touch, build up the record and confidence of the players before league action Others go for the top clubs around to let their players see what theyre up against in way of strong competition Each coach has his own philosophy and ideas about who and why they schedule certain teams for preseason action Several interesting things have surfaced this season in both high school and college ball FIRST TAKE the example of Davis High coach Mike Gardner For one reason or another the Dart mentor plays mainly the top schools for the higher 4A clas- sifications Sure their record was only in the preseason action, but in their league play against the schools their own size the Darts are 1 Try and convince Coach Gardner that the preseason play hasnt helped his team Theres no doubt about it, our preseason games all help us to get ready for Region Five action," the coach noted Lancers. THIS weeks problem will be the patience and ball control of the Falcons Year after t 9 year the Clearfield team shows extreme patience for a high school club as they work the ball around until someone gets the good percentage shot In the early going, teams like this would have frustrated the young and inexperienced Vike club but through the maschedule turity of a and with four league victories under their hat the Vikes are a poised squad pre-seas- THEN ON the other side of the coin, look at Ogden High Next year the Tigers go into the 3A ranks so their coaches decide to play some of their in preseason The Tigers ended early play with a 1 mark, but since that time have been beaten three times compared to one win in Region Two action It was probably a good move by the coaches to let the kids see what action will be like next year, but at the same time it might have hurt this years Ogden group 9-- WITH THE Clearfield team each week brings a different scoring leader. Theres no way a team can key on one of the Falcons because someone else will have the hot hand In recent weeks reserve Scott Wallace has scored well for Coach Roger Reid, in fact he may well have shot himself onto the starting five Royce Eves is another fine shooter for the Falcons as is Scott Balaich. The list of Clearfield THIRD angle is the plight of Viewmont coach Jim Cleverly The Vikes played the top two teams in the state Provo, and Skyline, a total of three games Three of their five loses were to these two clubs mark Although the Vikings ended up with an even for preseason action, they must have prepared the Vikes for region play, as they are currently undefeated in Region Two A 5-- 5 players that can and have scored goes on and on. They are a well balanced squad FIGURE if you play the best, your players will learn what they have to do to improve to become a top con1 VIEWMONT meanwhile has had their share of surprises but usually it has been the consistent play of Kevin Walker, Tim Eden and Court Wilkins that has the Vikes sitting on top of the region. These three have always played well for Coach Cleverly scoring in the double figures and controlling the backboards. Last week these three, along with about four other Vikes, held the taller Lancers tender Playing the best has helped us tremendously although we lost, Coach Cleverly added Same is true in the college ranks with the University of Utah The Utes played several of the top teams in the nation and won the majority of them and currently they are on top of the Western Athletic Conference standings DID THE preseason schedule help the Utes for WAC By bringing action, Jerry Pimm the coach feels it did m these top teams, we show our fans some of the best basketball talent around, as well as preparing our club for the conference war No matter what you or I may think of a coach and his preseason schedule, you can bet one thing, he has a reason for the team hes playing dw just five offensive rebounds. Going into the to U A Tito game the Layton crew were getting a lot more offensive rebounds than five per outing TWO PLAYERS turned in their best efforts of the season last week up at Layton. Both Mark Lalli and Dave Pearce turned m good performances for the Vikes. Lalli was instrumental m the Vikes early lead as he stole the ball several times for the easy lay-uPearce put the stopper on any type of Layton comeback in the second half as he exploded for three quick buckets to pull his team back out from the Lancers Reid isnt about to so you can give the game away bet that hell come up with an offense and a defense that the COACH Vikes probably have never seen before. But Coach Cleverly is no dummy either, you throw something up at him and in a few minutes hes beating you By DAVE WIGHAM Viewmonts basketball left little doubt in anyones mind Friday night as the Vikes took command of first place in Region Two by completely dominating Layton 56-3- WITH THE victory, the Vikes take over sole possession of the lead with a 4 0 record while the Lancers fall back into a second place tie with Clearfield at The story at Layton was established early as the only thing undetermined by the second half was the point spread the Vikes would win 3-- 1 by- - having a heyday on offense with several Vikes taking turns m the spotlight FIRST CAME guard Mark Lalli who played his best game of the year for Coach Cleverly. Mark was all over the floor stealing the ball for lay ups and shooting his famous outside set shot effectively At one point Mark stole the ball and went in for a despite the presence of Gilbert Then it was Kevin Walers turn as his soft jump shot was finding the mark from anywhere on the court. Next Court Wilkins joined 1,1 the fun as he hit on several lay-u- p buckets MANY TEAMS in the league have played a sagging zone defense in order to stop Laytons big man, Gilbert The Vikings are the only team in the region with the personnel to run a straight man to man at the Lancers. Each Viking took his turn stopping the Lancers main man, first it was Dave Pearce, then Tim Eden and Kevin Walker Juniors Kevin Hess, Cory Hanks and Cal Curtis all had their turns at guarding Gilbert and all did a good job THE RESULTS were obvious, the Lancers had no one on their club who could hit a field goal from the outside. It was well into the second period that the Lancers hit their first two pointer and by that time the Vikes were way ahead to stay. Meanwhile the Vikes were Viewmont Wins Over Layton Several people were beginning to wonder why the Viewmont basketball team was rated so high in the preseason poll for the region? OTHERS asked why the Vikes werent playing up to their potential in league action Both of these and many more questions were answered by the young Vikings last week when they knocked off previously unbeaten, in region action, Layton VIEWMONT now stands alone as king of the hill in Region Two with their unblemished 0 record This, the one in Layton Friday night, is the Viewmont team that was picked to win all the marbles in Region Two this year. The only ingredient missing from this team was experience. Dave Pearce is the only returner with any varsity playing time, and now they have some of that experience and theyre showing their championship form OTHER TEAMS arent the league title to the Vikes yet, especially Clearfield and Layton who are right behind Viewmont Clearfield gets their shot at the Vikes this week as the two collide at Viewmont, Friday A Falcon win would throw this region into a dog fight, but a Viking win and the Viewmont bunch might run away and hide with the title. conceding AS IT now stands the Vikes lead with a mark followed by Clearfield and Layton with marks. A Ben Lomond triumph would get them back in the title picture and a loss would almost kill Laytons bid for the crown. But a Lancer win would keep them right behind, or havent might be for the second spot 4-- 0 3-- 1 ing to have to put the ball in the hole. with something of his own This could very well turn into a chess game between the two coaches PLAYERS coming off the bench played an important role for the Vikes last week But this week they play another team who likes to use everybody so the bench aspect is a tossup The main asset for the Vikes is the home floor advantage, with that advantage give the Vikes a six point 3-- 0 IN THE second half. Viking center Dave Pearce decided to show the Layton people that Gilbert isnt the only big man in this league that can score, as the big man hit for three consecutive buckets over Gil bert. It was one of those games where the Vikes did everything right and the Lancers couldnt do anything right. In fairness to the Lancers, they are a much better club than they showed last week. After all you dont go undefeated m Region Two without having a good ball club. THE BALANCE Viewmont offense showed up in the final stat column as Walker and Wilkins each had 10 points, and Lalli, Pearce and Eden each added 9, 8 and 8 respectively. Gilbert ended the night with points for the Lancers but he was the only one anywhere near double figures. week Even the loyal Layton fans were wondering what the problem was last week as the Lancers were ambushed by the Vikings. Obviously the Layton team is better than they showed last Friday, and this week theyll be out to show the exact reverse of For Layton it disheartening loss Lancers are far from being out of the region title race and should be fighting mad this week, and anxious to prove a what they did a week ago FOR THE Lancers to win this game, and any other, according to the coaches is to come up with a couple of good shooting guards Opponents are going to sag in on Gilbert all day and make the guards score from the outside before better team than they showed last Friday VIEWMONT goes about its usual business of preparing for their next foe, confident that they can play with anyone in this league dw they come out of a zone Some weeks the guards have been able to score, and the Lancers have won Other weeks they have been able to get the ball inside to Gilbert and they won Last week they did neither and they lost Darts Plow Over Jordan VIEWMONT, with their Beet Diggers heighth and talent, were able to match up man to man with the Lancers The Scots of Ben Lomond may just do that too With players like 66" Mark Quayle and 67 Dave Jen- Davis Darts win over the J ordan Beet Diggers by 50 to 49 is nothing short of a real cliff hanger of a basketball game WITH THE clock reading 56 seconds and Jim Hess at the foul line, he dumped two foul pitches to put the Darts in the lead for the first time in the second half with a score of 47-4- nings the Scots just may decide to go for the man defense. It must be very frustrating for a player like Johnny Gilbert, week in and week out everywhere he goes he draws a crowd of defenders. For the Layton team to win they have to get the ball in to their big 8 Dug Cutter hit one of his long ones putting Jordan back man, something they were unable to do last Friday into the lead The Darts sprung down the court when the referees whistle gave the ball to Jordan With 18 seconds left to play, Hess stole the ball from Cutter and Benton jumped for the basket hitting two points for the win THE DAVIS Darts played an exceptionally aggressive game, keeping close guard under the basket, winning undisputed second place in the Region Five competition record displaying a Roberts alone and they need more points out of him. The guardline is still up for grabs each week with several candidates fighting for the starting spots Ben Bubak and Cal Woodward have looked good at times as has Rick Snow and Bart Weaver. Out of these four Coach Moon will have to find the right ones to score on a given night. THE BEN Lomond club has its problems at the guard spot also, so this game will be strictly strength which means the two front lines will square off in a good contest. Ben Lomond has even gone to a sophomore guard named Robbie Tillman in an effort to find the right person. Tillman is the younger brother of former Scot great Ben Tillman LAYTON HAS something to prove They are anxious to show that they were just off last week and they would like to prove it by blowing the Ben Lomond five out of the gym. Up front the Lancers have the edge while the guardline is a question mark for both clubs.
