P i i 4 ' . , i ; AVA MARIE MENDEZ i wsm SASKIA TIEDEMANN Foreign Students Arrive In Davis As Davis High School doors opened for the 1976-7- 7 school year, Davis students extended a warm welcome to two charming American Field Service students who joined them for the school year as seniors. ARRIVING FROM Val- paraiso, Chili is Miss Ana Marie Mendez, 16, and from Hamburg, Germany is Miss Saskia Tiedemann, 18. It is the first trip to the United States for both girls. Excited but rather frightened of their new adventure, both girls are very impressed with the country and are looking forward to a great year at Davis High School and with their American families. MISS MENDEZ is making her home with Mr. and Mrs.1 John Costley and family at 1214 East Sherwood Drive, Kaysville. Their family is delighted with Ana Marie joining them. The Costleys have two daughters, Susan 16 and Carolyn 15 and a son John 0. who is attending Brigham Young University. arrived Aug. ANA MARIE and is learning to communicate with her new family and friends. Mr. Costley speaks a little Spanish and also their son, so with this additional help, Ana Marie is 12 gradually becoming more at ease with her new life and surroundings. She also had some English classes in school in Chili. She has enrolled in the following classes at Davis: humanities, speech and drama, chemistry I, studio art, type 1 and English 1. SHE SAID in her native country, all subjects are required. They do not have a choice of selecting their school subjects, although in their second year of high school they do get to choose whether to take art or music. Their school day begins at 8 a.m. and they go til 1:30 p.m. and have 12 required sub- jects. After completing her school year at Davis High, and she returns to Chili she will have to complete one more semester before graduating from high school. THERE WERE 27 students who came from Chili on the AFS program this year and 15 are in the area with six being located in Utah. Her father is a broker. He is presently in Los Angeles, Calif, on an extended business trip. She receives a letter each day from either her family or friends. She has three brothers and one sister. Post College at Long Island, before being sent to their various destinations in the U.S. She was happy to arrive in Salt Lake City and to meet her new American family and to be with a family again. She loves the huge mountains in this valley. She finds the school system rather different. The school is also much larger. There were only 900 students in her school.
