Show ?I t fftitV'il nfrlllf r ff f nn " & Clipper web site starts next week Were working hard on the details of the new Gipper and Clipper Today web site, as I mentioned last week. There are several test articles on the site already, and were working on the final details of how the page will look and operate. Among the areas were working on is the question of how were going to handle the news from both ends of Davis County The Gipper comes out twice a week, while the Gipper Today is once a week, which involves some extra coordination anyway. To complicate matters, the Gipper and Gipper Today now both come out on Thursdays, making it impossible for us to simply have the current day's issue up on the site. I i I i ' I i . I i We're working on some alternatives that will make things both interesting and fun. One is that of the spin-off- s you will be able to find out about whats going on in Davis County no matter where you live. Wliile we gear most of the coverage toward South Davis for our Clipper readers, we know that some of you have relatives living in North Davis. By dialing into our web site, youll be able to get the North Davis news, as well. The same goes for our Gipper Today readers who will be able to access the news about South Davis. But we'll give you all the details on how the sites features and sections will work m next week's column This morning, weve met to discuss the web site, and weve also come up with a whole gamut of new features that we will be adding to it over the next several months. What the web page allows us to do is add new elements that we simply wont be able to offer in pruit. and we hope that some of these new features will be useful to you and maybe even a lot of fun In next weeks column Ill give you the web site address and outline what you'll find on our page. About the time fall comes LAYTON around, many of us seem to slack off when it comes to taking care of the garden areas around the home. With the rest of the flora and fauna preparing to cover up for the winter, we seem to feel its time to slow down But, to those who know gardening, fall is actually one of the more important seasons of the year and can be every bit as busy as summer. The Clipper went to a couple of Davis County area nursenes and also checked m with USU Extension Services Davis County offices to get the latest mfo on preparing your lawn and garden for winter. Vaughn Nielsen, manager of J&J Nursery and Garden Center (1815 West Gentile) in Layton, Diane Ashby at J&L Garden Center and Gift Shop (620 N. 500 West) m Bountiful, and Shauna Owens, master gardener at USUs Davis County Home and Garden Office m Farmington were the major contributors to this first of two articles. What follows is a sample of their wisdom. If you haven't already, now is the time to begin planting spring-floering bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses. If youve established a and hyacinths, tulips daffodil bed, dig. divide and replant crowded plants. Now is also a good time to dig up and store your summer-flowin- g bulbs, like gladiolus, dahlias and (after their foliage dies back) Let them air dry. for a few days then store in a cool, frost-fre- e place. You can also spray them lightly with organic pine oil to help them retain moisture during the winw can-nalih- ter Feed your lawn with wmtenzer and overseed or New features coming The original intent of this column was to acquaint you with the new features that we will be adding to the Much of the past two (and next weeks) paper. columns will be devoted to a discussion of our new web site, but I'd like to mention a few new elements that will be coming in future issues: Inside Often, theres neither room or time to cover an issue in real depth. But we're working on a new feature that will give you an inside view of how things work in Davis County We'll free up one of our reporters each month to spend an entire day or longer following key individuals, delving into an issue or simply going on the inside of an organization to reveal how it operates. While our focus in the Davis North Davis County Clipper will remain on South Davis, there are so many people who have relatives and friends in both ends of the county that well be adding a new feature called North Davis. The column will be a brief compilation of events happening in the Gipper Today coverage area. I'll publish more details next week. th A bigger press Many of you noticed that the TV listings didn't get into Thursday's Gipper. And recently, weve had to pnnt the front page of the Gipper in black and white. As the number of color adv ertisements and added features grows, our press capacity has become strained Sometimes we dont have all the space we'd like to get everything in. We will, therefore, publish the TV listings for Tuesday through Thursday in todays Gipper, so youll at least get a portion of the missing listings. But we're also working on a more permanent solution. As I mentioned last week, we have ordered several new press units that will enable us to handle the extra load while enabling us to provide more color than ever before. The units arrived last Thursday, and we began installing them immediately Within a week or two, well be able to run them and have a lot more press capacity than before. For your information. Im adding a photo of one of the new units being installed. By the way, few people know how large the Gipper and how many we have. Thats presses really are an interesting story in and of itself, but we'll have to discuss that another day. THE CLIPPER'S Darryl Hulber (left) and Clark Stahle plan how to link one of the new press units (left) with the existing press. BY BOB MKXELSON Clipper Staff Writer re-se- thin spots. Keep mowing your lawn until the first heavy frost Some people advocate cutting the lawn a little shorter for winter to avoid snow mold Many groundskeepers at golf courses Sallow this procedure. But. before you mothball that mower for the winter, you might want to get it serviced and sharpened to avoid the rush next spring. You should also keep watering trees and shrubs until that first hard frost It's particularly important for trees and shrubs planted this season Keep axil weather vegetables and flowers moist. Harvest vegetables frequently. That may be locking the bam door after the horse is gone for parts of Davis County which saw its first frost last week. Many gardens were partially or evenly totally and wiped out. Things can vary from bench areas may have fared better. If your garden came through the first frosting relatively intact, try covering it if cold temperatures return. This can prolong its use. ith colder temperatures and frosts also come insect invasions of your home. Keep your eyes open for spiders in particular. You may want to spray place-to-pla- around home foundations and doois opening to the outside. Many people feel this is the best time to establish a composting site.
