Us. rich' Ha1 Just a few hours earlier Id written out a bundle of checks to cover our monthly bills I felt anything but rich But oxer the next few days as I went about my usual actixities, my sons question remained at the back of my mind Are we rich? Upon closer examination, I may need to change my answer Although the words, high fashion," will nexer be used to describe my wardrobe, I hax e a closet full of clothes. So does my husband and our kids. Are we rich? We still sit on folding chairs n around a kitchen table, but at mealtime there is always plenty of food on our plates. We nexer go to bed hungry. Are we rich? Our car is 10 years old, but it is reliable and paid for. When the tank gets low on gas, we simply fill it. Next summer well buy a mini-xa- n Are we rich? I grumble to myself as I write out the check for the doctor's copay ment. BARKER Clipper Today Correspondent LAYTON LDS "I've always loved Maughan, of Layton I wanted to learn to play for a long time, and finally 1 decided I would do it. Laurie already had a music background. since she plays the piano, and she played the clarinet in high school Three years ago Laurie bought a practice chanter from Edinburgh Castle in Salt Lake City After practicing on that for a while, she ordered her bagpipes from Scotland. Laurie checked with music stores and she found John Murdock of Kaysville to give her lessons. He's an excellent piper, Laurie said Bagpipes are different than a lot of instruments. They are limited because there are no sharps or flats, and one can't control the v They sound best outside, Laurie said. Unlike a clarinet, where you curl your fingers, you play a bagpipe with your fingers flat and straight. "The reed doesn't go m your mouth? she said. "The only way to accent a note is with grace notes? The bag is made of leather and needs to be kept moist so it doesn't crack. You put dressing on it at first, and the moisture from your breath helps it, Laurie said. "It's important that you use it every day or at least every other e. day? j It takes quite a bit of wind to blow a pipe. You have to build up to it by plugging up some of the drones at first, Laurie said. Her two 'pipes have three drones tenors and a bass. Now she plays all three drones and marches at the same time. Laurie's ancestors on her father's side came from Scotland some from the borderlands and some from Glasgow. There are several different clans represented among my ancestors, she said. The kilt and hose are made of all wool. We got rained out at one event, Laurie said, and as we walked by a little boy asked his mother what the funny smell was?
