In 30 at bats against Pruett,; x the great Babe Ruth hit under .200 with only one home run and 15 strikeouts. In fact, Pruett struck Ruth out 10 of the first 15 times they faced each other. Pruett's upsets of Ruth, he claimed, kept him in baseball. Eventually he thanked Ruth for allowing him to earn the money that put him through med- ical school and become a doctor. Upsets are prevalent in perhaps no other sport like they are in boxing. De La Hoya was recently upset by Felix Trinidad, Mike Tyson was beat in 88 by . career bum Buster Douglas, and in the Rumble in the Jungle, Ali defeated ' the stronger, younger and heavily favored George Foreman. Only a tiny handful of teams and individuals can claim to have never been upset at one time or another. Rocky Marciano retired his boxing career at 49-- 0 after defending his title six times and becoming famous for sending guys to the emergency wards. Michael Jordan never lost an NBA Championship, and Ive never been beat ' at pinball. These perfect achievements are reserved however, only for the most gifted and blessed at their respective sport. If it werent for the upset, sports fans would spend a lot of their lives very., bored, much like we are watching this years World Series, a series in which we wont get to see an upset, as both teams have dominated their leagues this'll decade. As I mentioned, an upset doesnt designate the better team, everyone the state knows that Bountiful is the best soccer team to come around in ? while, it simply gives the underdog their just desserts. If an upset goes your way, its the greatest thing to ever happen. If well, you just have to find solace in the belief that often times things can hap-pe- n for a reason, and usually do. Boston was the exception to many rules in these years, beating the Lakers all six times they faced in the Finals. The Lakers finally got their revenge though, even if it was almost 20 years later, when Magic, Kareem and the boys beat Bird, McHale and Parrish in 1984, continuing the greatest sports rivalry of all time throughout the rest of the 80s. The upset should be as expected in sports as blown calls and training camp holdouts. College football's Rose Bowl has built a tradition of upsets in the past. From 1970 to 1987, bighigher ranked Big 10 teams beat Livingston ger, stronger and lesser known Pac-1- 0 a grand total of two times. Many of these losses were blowouts, serving as great upsets for the archives of sports surprises. There have been teams who have carried an upset throughout an entire season. I'm sure everyone in the Western Hemisphere expected the New York Mets to continue to be a bunch of losers at the beginning of the 1969 season. The Mets had finished in last place every year since they joined Major League Baseball in 1962. With the right combination of pitching, platooning, skilled management and guts, the Mets upset the entire National League, winning 100 If that wasnt enough, they went on to upset the Baltimore Orioles games. and win the World Series. Some players have even made a career based on the upset. Hub Pruett was a relief pitcher in the big leagues in the early 20s. Pruetts with an ERA of 4.63, a David to practically anyones lifetime mark was Last week, watchmg the Bountiful soccer team defeated by the East High Leopards caused the entire community of Da is County to let out a breath of first disbelief, then shock followed by disappointment. It was of course, a loss that was not supposed to happen, and it left me thinking, is any loss supposed" to happen? What Ive been pondering ever since, is something that is a staple in the sports world, and probably in life all around: the Great Upset. We all know what an upset is, it's w hen the underdog beats the powerhouse, the goats beat the heroes, or more appropnate to today's game, the small market and small payroll beats the big. That's generally how you can spot the true sports fans from the fake. A true fan will usually root for the team that's not supposed to win. Unless you're from Atlanta, theres absolutely no reason to pull for the Braves. Don't be a Bulls fan unless you're from Chicago, and changing favorite teams from season to season should be a crime punishable by death. Books, movies and clubhouse legends are made when the under-rateteam digs deep within, and finds a way to upset the top team. It's been instilled in our culture from day one, beginning with David vs Goliath. Does this mean that if the team that's supposed" to win loses, they are a lesser club? Probably not. When the Brooklyn Dodgers finally beat their nemesis, the New York Yankees in 1955, did this mean that the Yanks were not as good as a ballclub that particular year? No, it was just the Dodgers turn. It is utterly impossible for one team to dominate another forever. The closest that a team ever came to this feat was the Boston Celtics and their decade long manhandling of the Los Angeles Lakers. Jordan d, under-appreciat- Academic Achievements on the athletic field are important not only to a team, but to individuals and communities as well. High school sports can help build character, memories and friendships that last a lifetime. Her fathers nervousness was subsided when he saw how much Rachel loved football, and how she was embraced by the team. I knew I was beaten when I went to watch her practice, he said. The boys mothers excitedly told me what a great thing it was to have Rachel on the team. member of the team, the questions arose Once a about how to treat a football playing girl. At first they all had a little edge on their shoulders, and I'm sure they all had their laughs, said Rachel. But after a while, when I outran them all, they didnt have much to say Coach Taylor wasnt about to allow her any special treatment either. When players began asking him how to hit a girl, he replied, You'd better hit her as hard as you can or shell knock you over It didn't take too long, before Rachel had the respect of her teammates as not only a member of their team, but as a powerful force to be reckoned with. If she had a maturing influence on her teammates, Rachel t stands as an example to girls involved in sports everywhere. I think it is so important, she said about girls remaining active in sports. It helps to keep you focused on doing the right thing, and on the right track. Rachel will attend Davis High next year, where she plans to pursue volleyball, basketball and track. She and her parents have made the decision that trying to play football is not an option, as the boys will probably outgrow her as they get older. Nevertheless, her experience as a star player on a winning foqt- - ? ball team will be a fond memory for the rest of her life. Her uncle c and parents are glad she escaped with only the usual bruises and-sormuscles, and she learned something about the game as well. I though (football players) were dumb jocks, she said. Once I got into it I had to work really hard to learn all the plays, and it was tough.
