Bill Nye the Science Guy was my nightlv babysitter while I prepared supper Big Bird and Elmo seemed like members of the family, and my husband couldn't sleep at night until he'd seen the sports scores on the nightly news. So how is it that our family of fixe hasnt watched more than an hour of TV programming in the past two weeks? Simple. We can't Tien we purchased our new home, it came wired for cable But not wanting to pay a small fortune for a multitude of channels we wouldnt watch, we decided to pass on the cable television and use the rabbit ears on our TV' like weve always done And that's the problem. They don't work in our new locatioa So, until my husband rounds up an antennae and mounts it on the roof, we're without television. Which is just fine with me I've actually grown to like not having TV My kids hav e stopped asking me for the latest and greatest item they just saw advertised. When we sit down to read to the kids at night, I'm not rushing to get done in time for my favonte sitcom. And. best of all. I nev er hav e to wonder if my kids are watching a program that may contain questionable content I admit that w hen w e first mov ed in. I wondered how I was going to keep my kids entertained without having the good old tube to fall bade on. So far. it hasn't been a problem. I've found that activities such as coloring, playing with toys, and having friends over actually , keep their attention longer (and better) than the television ever did. Sure, there are some disadvantages For instance, without the nightly news I'm dueless when it comes to current ev ents I've had to listen to news radio and up my reading to newspaper help compensate. I can't unwind in front of the TV after the kids are in bed, so I've had to leam to relax with a good book instead. But, I guess that's not such a bad thing. In the average Amencan home, the television is on seven hours per day Children, on average, watch close to 28 hours each week. Prime time television presents an average of five acts of violence her hour, and cartoons typically contain 23 acts of violence per hour. So why is it that 75 percent of parents set no limits w hatsoev er on the amount of television their children watch? Simply because it's a battle. In our old house, we tried the "no TV week once -for about four days. My kids went through televison withdrawal, and I caved in. Going cold turkey only worked this time because it was a feature of our new house. If you're not ready to go completely without television, but would like to better manage its use, take one of these steps. (l)Watch TV with your kids and encourage critical thinking. (2)Teach kids how to be selective viewers by reviewing the week's TV schedule and Downchoosing programs together. size the number of TVs in your home. Having only one forces all parties to compromise. (4)Set up a token system. Each person in the family gets, say 10 tokens at the start of the week each one worth half an hour of viewing time. At the end of the week, each token not used for television can be redeemed for a quarter. - HILL AIR FORCE BASE -"get one thing straight, said Wayne Davis of Roy, "I never was a hero, and Im not one now Davis, speaking at the Aerospace Museum, related his experiences as a 7 gunner with the 526th Bomb Squadron from Kimbolton, England.
