'Beyond Rangoon a moving film with a shocking impact Fawna Jones Movie Critic i i i i i i i i i i i i i n i i i i 1 i 1 i tt In 1988, Burmas military dictatorship was being challenged by Aung San Suu Kyi. Kyi won a Noble Peace Prize for courageously facing down the guns of a brutal regime. She only recently was released from house arrest. That story never pushed its way to the forefront of world consciousness, which may explain why director John Boorman chose a turbulent Burmese backdrop for an occasionally moving exercise in social awareness. Boorman mingles two stories. I I I I I I Supxbifirickir I I ExcelentHHt tyranny. Although many of these scenes are tautly constructed, Boorman (known for movies such as Excalibur and Hope and Glory) never cranks up the tension. The movie can seem dismayingly instructional, a primer on Burmese terror. Sometimes, the movie shocks and moves. Watching innocent people shot at pointblank range gives us an immediate feel for the countrys obscene suffering. We get a sense of what it means to be subjugated. I suppose the political terror of Burma is meant to contrast with the personal terror Laura faced at home, but the juxtaposition proves less than illuminating. Part of the movies problem is that Arquette, who usually plays sexy oddballs, lacks the chops for forced to redeem a shattered life. Her husband and young son were murdered by burglars. On vacation in Burma, she meets a former professor (U Aung Ko) who was ousted from his university job for political reasons. Together Laura and U Aung Ko experience a variety of close calls that lead toward an escape attempt at the Thai border. The second, more explosive story involves the brutal exploitation 1 1 izes might be the worst thing about One involves Laura (Patricia Arquette), an American doctor whos 1 of the peaceable Burmese people. Their cruel leaders force them to live in constant fear, which Boorman rightly real M I I I 1 ri "FT I I I Good Poor Fair it such a role. An unneeded narration breaks the ominous mood, as well as flashbacks to the terrible night Laura lost her family. Mostly, though, the movie suffers from Boormans need to tell this story through American eyes. Ads for Beyond Rangoon inform us that history now has a witness. But did this story really need Laura? Why wasnt U Aung Kos experience sufficient? Its his country. Too bad, it isnt his movie. Even with Bottom line: flat dialogue telling us the story, Beyond Rangoon", can move you.
