The band has been a radio and fan favorite since arriving on the country music scene in 1987. The Shenandoah signed a new recording contract with RCA in 1991 and released their first album for the label, appropriately titled "Long Time Cornin'" in May, 1992. The disc yielded three chart singles; Shenandoah, Following three successful albums on Columbii Records, "Rock My Baby," "Hey Mister, I Need This Job" and "Leavin's Been a Long Time Cornin'." The video featured the band's good friend, Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman and Hall of Famer Eddy Arnold.) In 1989, Shenandoah spent more weeks at number one in "Billboard" than any other artist. Additionally, "Church on Cumberland Road" achieved unique status by maintaining the number one chart position for two consecutive weeks in three trade publications simultaneously. Not since Randy Travis' "Forever and Ever Amen had a single dominated all three trades. Due to contractual disputes, the filing for Chapter 1 1 protection, an argument over their name, and other legal matters, the group appeared in court more times in the past 24 months than most groups do the music was right for our newest album. And if I might say so, I think "Long Time Cornin'" is the best that we've ever done." Shenandoah will appear at the Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City on Sept. 9, two shows at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in their entire careers. In spite of chaotic events they found the determination to see things through. "Our music is the main thing that benefited from it all," explained Marty Raybon. It's five men with a mission; dedicated musicians whose remarkable alliance has not only been forged by the fire of hard times and the steel of adversity, but is also grounded in common philosophy, deep bonds of faith and friendship, and has, more recently, been tempered by the glow and flush of success. The Easter Seal Society of Utah is a Post Polio Symposium on Sept. 18 at the Salt Lake Government Complex at 2100 S. and State Street, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. "Polio, the dread disease of the 1950s was virtually eliminated in the United States by the vaccines and almost forgotten except by the survivors," explained Gini Laurie, sponsoring Founder of Gazette International Networking Institute. "The majority of those survivors, with zest and determination, achieved maximum rehabilitation and lived full and productive lives in their communities. In the past several years, however, as they have grown older, some have begun to experience the late effects of polio, pain, weakness, fatigue, and sleep and breathing problems." According to Laurie, the late effects of polio are still not well known among many physicians and they are difficult to distinguish from arthritis and other degenerative disorders of muscles, ligaments, and joints. Survivors who develop these new problems may be told "It is all in your head," given inappropriate prescriptions, or sent for expensive referrals. A frequent complaint is that their physicians do not appear to listen to them. The most commonly reported symptoms of the late effects of polio are unaccustomed fatigue, either muscle fatigue or generalized body fatigue, weakness in muscle, both those originally affected and those unaffected, pain in muscles or joints, sleep problems, breathing difficulties and swallowing problems. The Easter Seal Society will be the Post Polio Symposium to help individuals become knowledgeable about the late effects of polio. Dr. Jacquelin Perry will be the keynote speaker.
