Show missionary LETTER E 11 24 cook writes prom from butte montana E al cook a missionary in montana writes as follows special to davis davia co CLIPPER butte city is the greatest mining camp in the world it has about inhabitants besides five adjoining towns which are arc not more than one mile from butte city All together make about sixty five thousand butte has tyro two electric plants planta and one power plant and also one cable cabla street car line and two electric lines the city is surrounded with mines and smelters shelters sm elters within the radius of one mile there tire are two hundred producing mines and over eight hundred patented claims the producing mines employ from fifty f if ty to three thousand miners each the anaconda when working employs near to four thousand men and upwards of twenty thousand people depend on the anaconda company for support the anaconda company has suspended work at present a and nd several other prominent mines and nearly all have cut down forces leaving a great many people destitute in this city there are about four thousand nd idle miners in the city and aln r J laborers of all kinds are walking the streets without a dollar in their pockets for laborers to obtain work is ia entirely out of the question and my advice to anyone leaving their homes to better their condition is to go to some other place E M COOK buttz BUTTE CITY MONTANA jan 3 1893 1803 |
