Show By BETTY FISHER The three-day run of the 51st Davis County Fair ended on a pleasant note Saturday with a full day of activities and contests, exhibits and prizes. TROPHIES, RIBBONS or cash prizes were awarded to some four thousand exhibits in approximately 50 departments, depart-ments, contests and other areas of the fair. Most of the winners in the various classes of competition are listed as follows: ART: BEST of Show award went to Lucille Stock, Layton for a professional charcoal portrait; Jerry D. Hamble-ton, Hamble-ton, Bountiful received blue ribbons for both his water color and pencil drawing in the professional category. A first place in the professional oils went to Mary R. War-nock, War-nock, Farmington for a portrait por-trait and the first place in the amateur acrylics went to Laura Larsen of Bountiful. In the barbershop quartet competition, first place in the women's division went to "Four on the Floor" and first place in the men's division went to "The Chord Company." Com-pany." The women quartet members are Pat Daines, Cheryl Inglet, Cathi Nuttall and Janette Topham. Comprising the Chord Company Com-pany are Ron Zeeman, Lynn Stout, Russ Hailing and Joe Paul. IN THE tractor driving contest, David Sargent of Layton won the senior division and Jay Potter, Farmington Far-mington won the junior division. There were 889 exhibits in the Homemaking Department, Depart-ment, according to I uella Byram, chairman. Sweep-, stakes in this department went to Sharon Moss, Bountiful, Boun-tiful, for winning the most ' blue ribbons in various areas of the homemaking department. depart-ment. FARM BUREAU Talent Find winners were Vincent Humphries, 17, Bountiful, for his piano rendition of Ravel's "Jeuax d' Eau" in the senior division. He will now compete in the state talent find. The intermediate division was won by Daniel Adams, 11, Syracuse, who is a drummer extraordinaire and the junior division winner was Holly Johnson, 6, Bountiful, who did a mimi of a puppet. In the FFA and 4-H horse show, the top winner was Kelly Day in the junior division; Terry Blackham in the intermediate division; and Mike Jung in the 14 and older age group. THERE WERE SCO entries in the field crops, vegetables and fruits department with a total of 328 blue ribbons awarded by the judges. Nina Yamane of Syracuse received 24 of these blue ribbons. In the flower show, the Best Collection award went to Margie Burningham, Bountiful. Boun-tiful. Other awards were: Best Single Rose (an Otto Miller rose), Mrs. Theodore Burnham, Woods Cross; Award of Merit for a bowl of petunias, Margie Burnham; Best Annual , (gloriosa daisies) Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Bickmore, Bountiful; BEST HOUSE Plant, Mrs. Theodore Burnham; Best Flowering Shrub, (a Mimosa) Margie Burningham; Best Perennial (Black-eyed Susan), Kathryn Jennings, Farmington; Best group and best single gladiolus, Valerie Piepkorn, Sunset. Special awards in the artistic division went to Irene Olsen, Mr. and Mrs. Bickmore and Barbara Frodsham, Farmington. In the Hobbies Department, there were 789 entries with 248 of them receiving blue ribbons. Those who received sweepstake ribbons in this department which has a number of divisions, include: Randy Stevens for his rock "people"; Jon Hess, Farmington, Far-mington, for a silk screen. ALSO DAN Powan, Clearfield, Clear-field, for a dragster set in the junior division of models; and Mike Goodsell, Fruit Heights, for a model ship in the senior division; Nan Vanderwood, for a boudoir clock in the senior ceramics division; and Shauna Page for a scarecrow in the junior division. A sweepstake ribbon also went to Shauna Niederhauser, Kaysville, for a dried flower arrangement; Scott Shurtz, Woods Cross for leather work; Donna Hitchcock, Lay-ton, Lay-ton, a macrame plant hanger; and Darian Griffith, Fruit Heights, for an authentic Indian In-dian head-dress, in the miscellaneous mis-cellaneous category. BEST OF Show in the amateur ama-teur division of the photography pho-tography was awarded to Arland Hammon, Kaysville, for his black and white "Pioneer Town" and in the high school student division, Dave Phelps, Bountiful, garnered gar-nered the Best of Show award. Sweepstake ribbons went to Mr. Hammon for "Ancient Survivor" and to Tom Davenport, Daven-port, Clearfield in the amateur ama-teur division; and to David Siemens, Clearfield, in the student division, according to Etsil R. Fisher, chairman. THERE WAS s special department and a special day held for senior citizens. Approximately 400 entries were exhibited in their department. E.A. Dawson,. Layton, received a special judge's recognition for a beautiful handmade horse-drawn horse-drawn sleigh he had made.' '. Sweepstakes in the lapidary section went to Zola Millard for a bolo tie she had made. In the arts and china painting paint-ing section, Lois Smith received the sweepstakes for a bowl and pitcher she had painted; Phil Krebs, Kaysville Kays-ville won sweepstakes in the pottery section and special awards went to: Walter Davis, Layton, art; Dora Woodward, Kaysville, crafts for baskets made of pine needles; Elizabeth Smedley, Bountiful, home arts for a pants suit; Violet Wilson, Layton, crocheting; Etta Hayward, Bountiful, quilt; Iolien Webster, Layton, afghan; and Alta Childs, Bountiful, sewing. IN THE FFA and 4-H Dairy Show, blue ribbons went to the animals shown by: Flint Richards, Layne Thurgood, Bret King, Gloria Richards, Tyler Lieshman and Ben Gamble; with the showmanship show-manship ribbons going to Bart Cook in the junior division and Flint Richards in the senior division. In the beef fitting and showmanship awards went to Roy Carlson, West Point, junior division; and Marlow Thurgood, who showed both the grand champion and the reserve champion steers. THE GRAND champion fat lamb was shown by Roy Carlson Carl-son and the reserve champion was shown by Steven Carlson with Mitch Palmer, Bountiful, Boun-tiful, winning the blue ribbon in the senior division and Steven Carlson in the junior division. Grand Champion awards in the all-breeds horse show for Davis County residents went to: Paul Webb, Shannon Allred, Linda Frodsham, Blaine Carr, Don Sides, Mike Lpwder and David Cook, Jay Crandall, Gary O. Johnson, Noall Hyde and Bonnie Chris-tensen. Chris-tensen. A TOTAL of 106 4-H exhibits from the Davis County Fair will be on display at the State Fair next month. Winners of the style dress revue are Tina - Marie Wood, Clearfield and Rachelle Dahl of Layton. In the demonstration contest con-test Linda Mills and Lisa Jensen, Bountiful presented the best team demonstration and Carrie Niederhauser, Clinton, the best individual; with Kimberly Brown, Bountiful, Boun-tiful, giving the best bread demonstration; LaDell Wags-taff, Wags-taff, Kaysville, the best poultry and egg; Judie Hill, Bountiful, the best home improvement and Laurel Jenson and Melinda Passey, Bountiful, the best dairy foods demonstration. |
