Show r Worm turns NBA into rotten apple Roll over, basketball purists! Tell James Naismith the news! Basketball is no longer a sport. It probably never was but is less so today than ever before. Want proof? Just look at the NBA playoffs. As the playoffs get into full swing, the players are getting into full swing literally. The games this past weekend had no less than six players ejected for flagrant fouls. The most serious punch felt round the NBA occurred Saturday contest. Hawks player Douglas night in the Miami-AtlanEdwards landed a windmill right squarely on the jaw of ll Heat player Keith Askins. A three-minuensued at the Omni, bringing coaches and police officers onto the floor to restore order and quell the disturbance. Miami assistant coach Alvin Gentry broke his hand and finger while trying to restrain one of his players. Edwards, Askins and Grant Long were ejected. Other first round ejectees were Jazz forward Tom Chambers and Knicks center Patrick Ewing. In San Antonio, Spur cheap-shartist Dennis Rodman was finally ejected after scuffling with Jazz forward Tom Chambers, taking a swing at Karl Malones head, and tried to hip and knee check Jazz guard John Stockman into the hospital and out of the playoffs all that in just one game. With game three of the series resuming Tuesday night, demolition one cant help wondering what the blond-haire- d man will do for an encore. Anything seems possible given the weak and timid response of the NBA. As long as the Dennis Rodmans of the game are allowed to wreak havoc without regard to consequence the violence will continue. Contrast Rodmans response to the Stockton incident which resulted in his ouster to the Jazz stars. Rodman said his only regret was that his teammates didnt match his toughness. If they cant, they should just go to Utah and become Mormons, he said. Stockton on the other hand apologized for being out of control, when he shouted at Rodman from the bench after he was taken out of the game by an intentional Rodman foul Coach Jerry Sloan said was designed to take Stockton out of the game. To the NBAs credit, they did suspend Rodman for one game. But that isnt much when weighed against what could be an entire career for the victim of such violence. Its time for the NBA to restore order on the court. And its time for Dennis Rodman and others of his ilk to be given an endless vacation in the nearest psychiatric ward. Fans should let the league know that either the Dennis Rodmans of the NBA walk or they will let their remote controls do the walking. One final note to Mr. Rodman, your CTR ring is inthe mail. , non-conta- ct ta te free-for-a- ot I . Dont blame candidates for Demo debacle The very first television comI wrote involved a Hollywood actor portraying The Riddler. (When is a bank not a bank?) asked The Riddler. When its closed!) That commercial is hardly memorable. But events of last month mercial brought a similar question' to mind. When the party says so! And while riddles arent neces- sarily funny, Davis County Republican leaders are chortling over this one. In two Bountiful area legislative districts, the candidates listed on the November General Election Democratic under the Party banner are ballot impostors, according to Democratic officials. ..And it appears the cant do much about it. The candidates in question are Michael Bingham and Clay Swank. Their sin was to enter the County Clerks office and fork over $9. The closed minded and fearful approach that the council took in consideration of an appeal by Woods Cross High School Principal, Doug Beer concerns me. Woods Cross High School has a wonderful opportunity to obtain a large advertising sign and message board for a very low price. The advertising portion of the sign is being donated by YESCO and they are arranging for the school to get the message center for less than half of the original cost. This sign could bring in $20,000-$30,00- 0 a year and possibly even more. These dollars would belong to Woods Cross High School and could be used to buy the much needed and expensive technical equipment that cannot be purchased by the school district. The potential revenue for the school is great and selling candy bars for $2 and car washes for $3 could not begin to bring in this kind of money. Principal Beer spoke before the council asking that the high school be allowed a variance on an ordinance regulating signs. The council memss bers were rightfully concerned that this variance might allow other advertisers to try and get signs put all along the freeway. Another concern that was raised related to monies that might have to be spent if the city were ever to require the school to remove the sign. Both concerns were and are real and the members of Principal Beersj committee spent a year researching and changing their original plans to do everything possible to alleviate those concerns. An attorney has donated his time and is willing to work with the Woods Cross City attorney to write a variance that will be so absolutely specific that it does not allow these concerns to become problems. Some members of the city council were condescending, arrogant and unapproachable. Several citizens voiced their desire for the council to, at at the feasibility. The council apparently the very least, take a look-se- e having made their decisions before discussion even began, ignored these pleas and one member even began arguing with the citizens as they expressed their opinions. In addition, a motion had been made and seconded when councilman Saltzgiver, with absolute indifference to Roberts Rules of Order (which govern formal political meetings) called upon a former councilman to give a legal opinion. This man had just slipped into the meeting and had not heard any of the presentation or discussion prior to his arrival. The inattention to orderly forum was bad enough, but to ask a legal opinion from an uninformed lay person is unconscionable. The witches that may exist in the minds of the council members have been obliterated along with a golden opportunity for our children to be enriched and advanced in their educational opportunities. I can only hope that the high school can find a way around the inabilities of the city to deal with this situation. Maybe a few thousand phone calls to city hall would help. Lise S. H. Tuttle Woods Cross Broken trees work of young vandals? ill-supervi- sed Editor, Most mornings I walk through my neighborhood as well as some of the surrounding areas. It is great to see the home owners beautifying their yards and keeping them neat and clean. However, there has been an occurrence that has deeply saddened me. At the home located at the comer of 1850 South and 800 East, young trees have been planted repeatedly only to have them broken off and trampled down. Even when the owner has tried to salvage them by supporting them back up, within a short time they are trampled down again, and I am sure, always under the cover of darkness. It is hard to understand what satisfaction can be realized from destroying other peoples property and I am asking myself, why? Is it because of a grudge, an after church or school activity to impress peers or they havent been taught better. Im sure none of us think our child would ever do such a thing, but do you know what they are doing when they are out after dark? P. Todd races and thats got is the lack of party affiliation. the Democrats hopping mad. These guys dont subscribe to Democratic Party principles, said a party official. So the County Convention delegates didnt nominate them. Their names may appear on the ballot, but that doesnt mean There is no mechanism for defining who is a Democrat and who is a Republican (a good thing, incidentally, since the ideal is to vote for they represent the Democratic Due to sparse attendance at caucus meetings, extremists can rope up the needed number of delegates by organizing their friends and relatives to win delegate positions. but it Granted, thats democracy would also allow Attila the Hun to become a bona fide candidate. Several Republican leaders have the person, not the party). The party caucus or mass meeting concept helps foster the problem. Party. In the end, the question of their status will be moot. Both men are running in solidly Republican districts. Bingham has as much chance of beating Republicans Quinn Gardner or Sheryl Allen in District 19 as Dennis Rodman has in being selected an LDS General Authority. But Bingham and Swank are not to blame for the controversy. They stood up and paid their $9; no other groused recently that extreme right wing elements are packing the caucus meetings. (As soon as I said that education was important to Utahs future, a bunch of fanatics became wild and angry, said one Bountiful delegate.) And it's happening to the Democrats, too. In a central Salt Lake district, an incumbent legislator was defeated by an extreme conservative with a large family voting bloc. If normal Democrats become lazy, the crazies can pack the caucus meetings and eliminate your choice on the general election ballot, said a party leader. But as a Utah tradition, the neighborhood caucus is solidly entrenched. And if Bingham and Swank have thrown a monkey wrench into the party machinery, dont blame them. It's the machinery that needs oiling. Democrat did. If anything, the Democratic Party is to blame for not organizing better to field a loyal candidate. And the Republicans shouldnt be too joyful either. The incident opens the door for Democrat-leanin- g voters to cast ballots in the local Republican Primary, thus skewing the results in expected close races between Gardner and Allen (District 19) and Nancy Lyon and Ted Bradford (District 20). As far as some Republicans are concerned a Democrat barging into the GOP primary is the equivalent of an unwanted house guest and I wouldnt be surprised if the New nutrition labels add to consumer confusion Editor, Thank you for running informative articles on health related issues in your Tempo section. However, I have to disagree with a statement made in New Food Labels Help with Eating Habits of Consumers, in the April 12 edition. Sara C. Parks, a registered dietitian is quoted as saying what a powerful new tool the new Nutrition Facts food labels are, when in fact, for the average consumer, they do nothing but add to the confusion about food choices. To most of us, grams is a meaningless measurement. Armed with a little knowledge, we look at the percentages offered to see if the food in fact falls within the recommended guidelines of less than 30 percent fat. However, the percentages they put on the labels are not the actual percentage of fat to total calories of a product, but total daily intake. Based on what caloric intake? for what weight and activity level? People think they are eating something that contains 10 percent fat (as stated on the label, based on total daily intake), when in reality they are ingesting more than 40 percent fat in that particular food. (Check out your favorite kind of tortilla chips for example.) The way food labels are structured, they give us a bunch of misleading misinformation unless you have a degree in nutrition to understand it all. The only way to know the true fatcalorie ratio with any item is to take the total fat grams per serving, multiply by 9 (there are 9 calories in 1 gram of fat), and divide that number into the total calories per serving. Its more work than most consumers will go to as they do their grocery shopping. Fortunately, there are resources out there that help eliminate the confusion and make the task of deciphering food labels easier. I know that the American Heart Association has developed a fat gram wheel, and our program, Think Light! has a fat ruler. Both of these tools, and others like them, simply line up the two figures in question (fat grants per serving and total calories per serving) like a slide rule, and give you in a little window. They are indispensable for the percentage read-opeople interested in truly ferreting out the hidden fat American food manufacturers have slipped into practically every product on the market. As to Sara Parks assertion that there are not good foods and bad foods perhaps not, but consider this. In order to feel satisfied, would you rather eat 10 potato chips, ingesting 10 fat grams and 150 calories at 60 percent fat, and very little other nutrition, or 35 cups of long grain rice which also gives you 10 fat grams two percent of total calories from fat (a total of 5,674 calories)? Its obvious which would fill you up. All foods are not created equal. For that same 10 gfams of fat, you could eat 12 cups of black beans (3 percent fat, 2,700 calories), or 40 slices of Democrats have the last laugh after all. ' The central problem in all of this Italian bread (3 percent fat, 3,312 calories). It goes without saying that nobody eats that much rice, bread, or beans. The point is, we need enough healthy calories to fuel our bodies for a quality life active and disease free. American food manufacturers and their new labels are only trying to keep us in the dark that much longer, because they know as soon as people figure out there really are good-tastinlow fat alternatives to their high-fa- t, foods, their products will stop selling. g, over-process- Kim Madsen Aerobic DirectorThink Light Facilitator Towne & Country Health and Fitness Club Published semi-weekl- John stahle, Sr. by Clipper Publishing Co., Inc. y publisher R.
