When we refinanced our home early last year, we were told we would have to deduct the points over the life of the loan. Was that correct? A. Usually, yes, if the points meet the general qualifications. To be deductible, the payment of points must be the usual practice in the area where the loan was made. Also, the number of points cannot exceed the number usually charged in the area. They must not be paid with funds obtained from the lender. An exception to deducting the points over the life of the loan exists if you used all or part of the funds from refinancing to make improvements to your main home. Then, the portion of the points related to the home improvements may be deducted in the year you paid them. TV f High School.
