Show t Thursday, October 7, 2004 Hgh Notes Marts The Lancers have started out on the LAYTON right foot this year. They have risen to the occasion in their quest to blaze a new trail, and Leave a Legacy that thousands of students can build upon in the many years to come. The theme for the 2004-200- 5 school year was introduced and emphasized on the third day of school during the Welcome Back Assembly, and the Lancers have truly taken it to heart ever since, striving to be a beacon for their community. The Lancers were so eager to achieve greatness, in fact, that we didnt even wait for school to begin. Laytons incredible football team jump-starte- d a promising season by stomping Sky View 34-in the first game ever played on USUs new football field. From that point on weve never looked back, leaving a trail that few can even dream of following. The football team is just one of the many areas of excellence on Laytons plate this 8, year. Both the Lady Lancers soccer and volleyball teams have already tallied key victories and should be well on their way to a successful postseason. The golf, girls tennis, and cross country teams have all made strong appearances in their respective sports this season as well. With all of the pride that Layton accumulated during its first month of competition, the students were still able to see beyond their strengths in athletics, and realize the strength that they could bring to the community. Layton teamed up with rival school, Northridge, for the week of September Spirit Week. It was a week that neither school will soon forget. Activities were based on the construction of school spirit and the unification of all students in Layton City. 0, They were only a though, to the real purpose of serving the community, and raising money for clothes and food for Safe Harboif a battered womens shelter in Kaysville. Layton High is now in the midst of another great week, Homecoming. As the week reaches its climax, it side-sho- needs to be recognized that at Layton High, Homecoming is much more than a week of football and dancing. Students raise school spirit through their participation in hall decorating and street painting. Other activities of the week include: a tailgate party, movie in the park, competition among classes, bonfire, and parade. No, not even Homecoming is ordinary at Layton High. As incredible as the first month of school has been, the Lancers do not stop here. The next month of school will be just as, if not more, extraordinary than the last. A9 BY SARAH ROBERTS AND MARY HALES WXHS Correspondents - Over WOODS CROSS the past 17 years Woods Cross High School Madrigals, under the direction of Neil Hendriksen, have built an outstanding reputation in choral performance. The Madrigals or Mads have earned superior ratings at region and state every year since 1987 They annually participate in the Heritage Festival and are successful in sweeping the competition year after year. The choir is also highly recognized in the community as they are requested to perform in a number of church services, family gatherings, and business parties, throughout the year. Hendriksen has been persistently encouraged to send in audition discs by a director from the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) saying, The country really needs to hear the choirs of Woods Cross High School? The ACDA is a professional organization designed to improve the art of choral directing and singing in America and throughout the world. Hendriksen is one of approximately 18,000 choral directors representing more than one million singers across the United States. The other members consist of professional, church, college, junior and senior high school, community and childrens choirs. Each year ACDA receives approximately 6,000 audition discs. The Woods Cross High School Madrigals were selected to be one of six high school choirs in the world to perform at the National Convention in Los February ittusit Angeles, Calif. The 2005 National Convention promises to be truly historic due to the record high number of choirs who auditioned. The venues for concerts in Los Angeles include the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the said Hendriksen. The Madrigal choir was selected last April by Hendriksen after holding auditions to find the best that Woods Cross has Immanuel Presbyterian Church, the Wilshire Christian Church, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple, and the recently opened Walt Disney Concert Hall. Not only will the Madrigals perform in one of the venues, but will also be used as the choir for the conducting competition. Each year approximately 7,000 directors of ACDA attend the convention to participate in competition, see showcased choral materials, hear music from choirs around the world, and share their ideas. The Salt Lake Children's Choir, Brigham Young University Singers, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Woods Cross Madrigals will represent Utah at ACDA. No other high school in the state of Utah has ever been invited to perform at the National Convention. This is an absolute honor to be invited. It is like competing in the NCAA Final Four. Not just anybody gets asked to go, to offer. Striving for perfection has always been an important goal for Hendriksens choirs. The pressure to achieve that goal will be especially high this year as the Madrigals prepare to perform for the nation's best. Last year, the Madrigals were invited to perform at the Western Division of ACDA, which came with an incredible amount of dedication and hard work. This year the pressure for perfection increases dramatically. It will take a lot of commitment and rehearsal time, but we will be ready Hendriksen said. The opportunity not only comes with pressure for excellence, but also a financial burden. The trip to Los Angeles will cost the choir roughly $7,500. They also have to raise funds for the annual Music Department trip to compete in the Heritage Festival costing each student an additional $500. The Madrigals of Woods Cross High School are searching for sponsors and donations to help fund this opportunity. Businesses and individuals interested in making a financial contribution to the Madrigals can contact Neil Hendriksen at Though expensive, the cost does not diminish the excitement of performing at such a prestigious event. It goes a long way to say that Woods Cross choirs, espen cially the Madrigals, are and respected throughout the country concluded Hendricksen. 402-450- 0. well-know- Give the good guys a break! looking at immodest girls; I yhate I hate it! Im not referring to the A immodest in speech or manners; I am talking about every mini-skiout there that makes me want to run away screaming and poke my eyes out with a wrench. From what I understand, the pure motive behind showing some skin is to impress the guys. The shorter skirt, the lower shirt, or the more belly shown apparently fills the need for attention and lust. These girls want to get the guys interested, yet many lack the creativity, moral stability, and tact that is required. Wiat type of guys are they trying to attract? If they dress and act at a level, they should rt rd guys chasexpect skirts. after their short ing frilly Often, while passing through the halls of Davis High School, I pick up on small complaints from the female teenage populous. Why cant I find the right guy or Why are men such pigs? Obviously interested in standing up for my own gender, I turn to refute such statements and find just the type Ive been speaking of. TTieir entire outfit, minus the shoes and cute purses, could be made with the same amount of material as my socks. Most often I choose not to approach them or dignify their inaccurate jest with a response. I turn around and continue walking the hallway, averting my gaze to the very familiar patterns on the floor. The fact that they are more concerned with flaunting their sexuality rather than focusing on their education is not encouraging. Increasingly, each room in every school holds the girls that carry the bare minimum. I am sick and tired of staring at the wall in my classes. It is frustrating to not have a place for my eyes to rest other than inside my head! I cant concentrate when it is most critical in school. During tests, I need to look around the room to think, but there usually isnt any room for my eyes except at my desk. These are good girls, however. They are kind, educated, and thoughtful. I do not intend to demean or insult anyone, but simply to let these women know that they are simply missing out on their true attractive potential. Immodest outfits do not provoke clean thoughts in men - plain and simple. These type of girls are most susceptible to sexual harassment and far worse crimes in the future. If nothing else, protect your- early. Parents play a large part in forming these young girls into the women of tomorrow. How are they going to be dressed for their first job selves, ladies! The Utah culture has a high demand for these type of women. These debauching habits begin interview? What type of boyfriends will they bring home to the parents? I fear for the rising generation. We, as current or future parents, need to teach our children the need to uphold the choice, but faltering values of society. Be courageous! The clothes you pick out may not be what your friends are wearing, but thats OK. You can be different, and refreshingly beautiful! Force the guys to look at your heart and you will gain meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime. A fully clothed girl bubbling with personality is thoroughly attractive! Because they do not follow the trends of society, it shows a quality of character that is almost staggering. Dont think for a minute that the good guys are all gone. I appreciate those women at my school and abroad, who do their best to be modest. They make life so much easier and enjoyable by showing respect to themselves and others around them. These are the type of women who will attract a man who is sophisticated, educated, and will recognize the pulchritude, or beauty, of the soul. Dress appropriately and you will be appropriately addressed. Dont sell yourself for less than you deserve, girls, and please, give the good guys a break! |
