Show DAILY 4 UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON, EDITOR. NO GENERAL DISFRANCHISEMENT. That is serious but not unexpected news which appears in a Herald special today concerning' a movement to disfranchise the Mormon people in Idaho. This is mentioned not to discuss it but to call attention to the equally great extreme to which the mine owners have gone at Cripple Creek in dealing with a brother mine owner who happens to be a little broader than they. The Portland is the greatest mine ever opened in the state. It has been worked now for eleven years practically since its discovery under the management of James F. Burns, one of its discoverers. It has given constant employment to from 400 to 600 men, and its dividends have been large and steady. Since 1894 Mr. Burns has worked the mine on the open shop plan. He did not concern himself when a man applied for work whether he belonged to a union or not; all he required was that he be a sober, capable miner, and he' was employed. We cannot believe, however, that any plan will be adopted looking to the disfranchisement of the Mormon people in general in our neighbor state. Senator Dubois and other leading men are opposed to this; and it is PRICE8: It probable that their counsels will prevail. may be that the effort will be limited to taking from those who practice polygamv the right of the ballot.
