Senator Smoot is a very able man and very useful to the Republican party but he can never expect to be as popular with the leaders in Washington as is Mr. Kearns. Mr. Smoot can never be, or at least ought not to be, the pliant follower of Hannaism that Mr. Kearns takes pride in being. Mr. Smoots friends contend that he will be a leader in the senate; but the Republican ring which now controls that body does not desire leaders; it wants followers. Daniel Webster himself would be persona non grata in the senate at the present time. Aldrich, partner of the Standard Oil people, Hanna, chairman of the national committee, and Allison, the ready servant of the trusts; these are the leaders, and they do not desire any rivals. The man who will go to Europe during a session of the senate and leave his proxy with Mr. Hanna is the man for them. If Senator Smoot will not compound with Kearns, there is still one other hope; and to those people who earnestly desire his reten-tio- r of bis place in the senate, this word of advice is extended: Keep Mr. Smoot there until after the next election in Utah. All vote the Democratic ticket in this state next fall so that we shall have a Democratic legislature. Then you will see that the Republican party will not permit Mr. Smoot to be thrown out of the senate.
