Cromwell's death mask, which so appropriately rounds out the Cromwell part of the Harvard Carlyle collection, hung for many years In the English writers home In Chelsea and was then given by him to his friend and correspondent Professor Charles Eliot Norton of Cambridge. The cast had been presented to Carlyle by the sculptor Thomas Woolner, the present possessor of the original death mask, and Is one of the few casts ever taken from the original mask. When Carlyles bequest came to Harvard Professor Norton presented the cast to the Harvard college library, and the Harvard library thus became possessed of the fourth cast taken from the original mask, the other three being respectively at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and in the British museum. Carlyle considered It undoubtedly the truest existing Image of Cromwells face, far to be preferred to the common casts in which all the finer points of likeness ' had become obiIterated. In whose home he resided. She will now continue the preparation of the whole wheat bread for him and minister to his simple wants In epicurean matters with an accentuated pleasure, as she has crossed the Rubicon from doubting to embracing his tenets to the extent of agreeing to share his frugal fare with him forever. His breakfast consists of a slice of whole wheat bread, baked after his formula, together with an apple. Luncheon consists of fruits, figs and nuts. At supper he becomes real extravagant and adds another apple to his breakfast bill, together with a handful of nuts. In quest of a lodging house where his light housekeeping could be satisfactorily conducted, Yost arrived at Miss Lalles home. With womanly tact and sympathy she entered Into his plans for recovery from indigestion, and, incidentally ,to make his purse more plethoric. It was not long before the fair landladys heart began to beat In unison with that of her abstemious boarder and she harkened to his pleadings that she share his Joys and divide his Borrows. : : North Ogden Notes : S : (Special Correspondence.) A man with boys and girls to bring up will not come to a place where attention Is called to gambling houses by gaudy furnishings without and within, accompanied by bands of inu-sand every other device and scheme known to attract the attention of those boys to the hell holes. There are at least 1,000 people In Reno who have no visible means of support, but live by any and every means known in a town where the gates are wide open to every vice known to the calendar of crime. It costs money to supimrt uny element In society .and that cost is not lessened by the tinhorns and rounders who Infest the town. The cost of supiiort-ln- g that class is greater than the coat of supporting an equal number of business men or farmers, and someone must foot the bill. Such leeches suck the lifes blood from a community and are an expensive luxury anywhere In the world. Colorado, Washington, Utah and California have representatives In that class here In great number. Nevada is a wide open stnte and Reno la a wide open town and within her gates may be found everything, and including tramps, well dressed, well fed, murdering thugs. Reno will be blind to its own Interest if it harbors such an element much longer. There Is one way of getting rid of them and that way is to stop gambling. If the better element of society, people who have the best interests of the town and state at heart, do not take Interest enough In the well being of their families to expunge from our statute books some of the loose laws that now stand, we cant hope, and do not deserve, to build up on lines of better morals, better government and better conditions all round. The Bee will tell the Observer right now that when its pocket Is touched or when it fears its pocket may be touched that which calls Itself the better element of society becomes often a farce and a fraud, frequently a delusion and a snare.
