What the research reports didnt conclude, though the raw figures were there, was that teachers salary schedules in Utah have just kept up with inflation. For example, the report indicated an average beginning B.S. degree salary of $6,651 in 1973 and $9,768 in 1978. Nowhere was it calculated that thats a 46.8 per cent increase while the C.P.I. measure of inflation for the exact same period was 46.5 per cent. Nor was it observed that the remaining 33 per cent increase in pay (80 per cent less 47 per cent) really is only a 23 per cent increase in constant value dollars. And that perhaps 23 per cent is not too much when assessing the value of a sixth year teacher compared with one with no teaching experience. It could also be factually noted that as an overall average the increases in pay rates in private sector employment have beat, though very slightly, the rate of inflation for either the past 5 years of 10 years periods.
