You take it around town and show your close friends and relatives and probably drive out on the highway for a short spin to see how the little darling holds the road., When you get the car to your driveway you get out and check all the buttons, knobs and switches in the car manual. The interior and the exterior gleam and shine and you promise yourself to clean and wax the car regularly to keep it just as spotless as ' when it came from the dealers showroom. This morning, bright and early, my husband and I donned our tennis shoes, grubbed through the closets for polishing rags, searched the garage for the Turtle wax and hit the driveway to make good the promise we made three years ago when our car sparkled with fresh paint. The Silver Fox, thats the name of our gunmetal-gra- y Toyota, had begun to oxidized paint and the get chrome had broken out into a definite case of rust acne which required liberal doses of chrome polish and elbow grease. Car waxing always gives back the satisfaction if instant improvement and so its been one task that Ive enjoyed since young teenage years . . . Well, lets say Ive enjoyed it every time except when I let the wax bake on the old green Bulck back in the 50s. It only took two more coats of wax, applied at night, in the cool of the garage to remove the sunbaked crust Id made that afternoon. . Sitting on the concrete drive, working up a healthy sweat polishing chrome this morning, gave me food for thought. As each rust spot received the rings. Strangely, think of enough it made me them as sores ' spreading infection or as weeds sending runners. The time tested saying, A stitch in time saves nine," kept dancing through my brain and I knew for was I ipaying procrastination. Two or marks promised to be the first to rust through if not polished three deep pit regularly from this time forward. I thought, "How perfectly marvelous, school is in twenty four hours a day the simplest tasks teach the most practical truths. The garden by the driveway had more than its share of blooming weeds where last year I had stayed up. with them before they could get going strong. It's an amazing fact that weeds miraculously spread at least ... five times ft chrome cleaner, I noticed that even tiny erosion spots had large rust J7 JUDITH VANIER faster than domestic plants. Maybe we ought to add to the list of time tested sayings, "A weed in time, saves thirty-ninA teacher of mine in India used to say, "The more we e. the more we become possessed by our possessions . . . so, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY." How funny and ridiculous our lives seem when you look at it from that angle. We get a job and decide we need a car for work. We get a car and then need to buy insurance, pay possess, for the license, and registration. We take the car to work and need to pay for parking, gas and maintenance. If someone bangs the car in the parking lot we have auto repairs and our insurance rates go up. By this time we need a better job or need to work more hours to pay for our car . . . and we haven't even built the garage yet to keep our repair bills down. Yes indeed, I think the teacher spoke words of wisdom. Suddenly a wonderful plan comes to mind. Id be much further ahead to sale the house, move into the garage, lease my car to cover the garage payments and let my. dog Alfie, do the weeding, he likes digging In the garden anyway. |
