Sheriff Johnson presented nearly $27,000 in unpaid bills to the commissioners, noting that most of them had not been budgeted for this year. The apparent problem has arisen as a result of several bills coming into the sheriffs department from the last administration. Each day I open the mail and find another bill I wasnt expecting, reported Sheriff Johnson. Only today I got one for $35 for service awards that were ordered Dec. 28, 1978, just before Sheriff Lawrence left office. I havent even seen what we had printed, he continued. Some of the bills date back as far as November 1977, according to the sheriff. Its really going to hurt my budget to come up with these payments now, he added. Ive got another bill for $625 for manuals that were ordered before the left office. Mayor Norm Sant reported he was interested in the fact that none of the citys rental agents had opposed a possible fee. Usually when we start talking additional fees within the city, Counwere deluged with calls. cilman Rogers pointed out theres been no real opposition, because any action taken by the council in imposing a fee would probably just be passed on to the renters. Following the decision for the $5 fee, several questions arose, and the council decided to rescind the action and study the proposal further. One councilman pointed out that $5 was not enough to cover the paper work and if somebody doesn't comply are we going to send out a $6 an hour policeman to collect?" The proposal will be discussed again at the next city council meeting. LAMAR TWEDE State Savings and Loan 't |
