Baseballs over; WFFL football ready By Bliss Fullmer The baseball season ended Saturday throughout Weber County, and now its time for football. Registration was sparse at Roy Recreation Center. After two days, only half of Roys football youngsters had signed up, but Frank Tremea was not discouraged, nor surprised. A lot of kids dont get the football fever until they see their playmates in uniform, he said, Then they rush down to see if its too late. WFFL football will be much the same as last season, but there have been some significant changes. Last year there were "B teams in every weight bracket, but now only in the 8, 9, and 10 year old leagues. Last year the coaches . 125-pou- were required to play every boy in every game. This time around, each boy is to play a minimum of eight plays from scrimmage in every game. The 125 pound division was for 13 last year, but now it inyear-oldcludes the 14 year-oldThe rules committee of the WFFL is constantly trying to upgrade its football program. When violations or discrepancies are discovered, the committee takes action. The B teams were originally implemented to give less talented athletes an opportunity to compete at their own level, but coaches, parents and even players seized it as an opportunity for stacking teams to win ballgames.' In some cases, the B" teams were actually stronger than the A teams of the same age and weight groups. To correct the problem, the WFFL has done away with B" football, except division. in the The Davis' . The rules committee made changes to allow 14 year-old- s to compete in the division. This . change should benefit the little guys, who would normally have to play with, and who would against the super-star- s normally be playing junior high school ball. Some believe that the influx of players of Davis County, into the bigger weights of the WFFL will create an imbalance with the Weber County teams, and they might be right. The better athletes of Weber County will be playing junior high school ball, leaving thin ranks to compete against the cream of the ninth grade crops in the various Davis County cities. The rules committee has initiated action to discourage cities from stacking teams. If there are two or more teams from the a city in the same league the teams must play each other in league competition. If the score becomes lopsided, a few eyebrows will be raised at the WFFL headquarters.
