Gilson, 634 South Fourth East street. Mrs. Gilson, e is eighty years of age, was in bed very sick and two of her home with her, when the police loudly knocked at the door, i -- i daugh-lllll,,fer- the room, with the charge that they had of tliat liquor was being made and sold on the premises. The d rm jear old lady began to cry, one of the daughters became with fright, but the other asked what was wanted. One of the KEiiijben 'asked her what she did for a living, while another went out i the kitchen to search, but the officers were soon convinced that a oils and dreadful mistake had been made. Mrs. Gilson was the wife of Samuel H. Gilson, former United ,ll,l,r "tes marshal of the Territory of Utah and later a well known of this state and one of the pioneers of mining of the state. rcH? of the daughters present had been an employe of the federal ernment in the narcotic department where her health broke and returned home. Her record is one of the best in the federal she is artment. Through her illness her hair turned white-an- d sick and nearly collapsed from fright when the bold officers en-- d the home. Another daughter was in the government service for jen years, secretary to Major Hunt, and when prohibition came iwent into the service. While still another daughter who was he federal telegraphic service went to the Walter Reed hospital tng the war and died in the government service. Can the ordinary person comprehend how it is possible to enter l a home and to openly and in writing prefer charges of such a ire. The warrant for the search of the premises and arrest was ;ed by Gaylen S. Young, and the charges were sworn to by A. A. se, police officer of Salt Lake County, State of Utah, that he has on and probable cause to believe and does believe, that intoxi-nliquors are being kept and possessed and sold in violation of Hjjned it and stepped-int- o trans-iieduicij- and when they realized their mistake made proper apology, but that did not right the great wrong that had been done. Commissioner Burton, if you want to wage your cleanup campaign in a lawful manner, keep out of the homes of decent people who are working hard every day to pay you your salary, probably more money than you ever earned in any other business, and pick up the well known bootleggers who are openly plying their trade on the streets in defiance of all law. We can offer no excuse for this bonehead meddling, but probably Commissioner Burton can explain. Some one ought to explain, good and plenty. The raid was a surprise and shock to Chief Burbidge. . TAX BOOSTERS Another boost in taxes for the people in this county is announced just at a time when the people were congratulating themselves that the taxes would not be raised. The county commissioners lowered the h of a mill, but the Board of Education general county taxes and the mosquito board came along with their extra assessment and we will now be asked to pay 33.3 mills instead of 32.2 we paid the past year. When it comes to grabbing off the money the school board is getting pretty cocky. They have no conscience and under their present extravagant system they are heaping a load upoh the peoples back which is becoming to heavy to carry. But, give power to any man or to any organization, and few there are indeed that will not use it to the utmost limit. Then we have another class of philanthropists who are always ready and willing to do big things at the expense of the other fellow, but when it comes to spending their own money, they cannot be found. When the people voted unlimited power to school boards it made a serious mistake. This power should be withdrawn. Our school boards were trusted and supplied with unlimited amounts of did-noknow money; in fact they have had so much money they what to do with it and as a result the yearly revision of text books has become quite a game.
