Show THE CITIZEN 9 THE BABY ACT (Continued from page 6.) They decorate the story with an accusation that Republican members of the senate and housie showed their delight when it was stated that the president was seriously ill. The other day Mr. Cox engaged in a passage at arms with one of his auditors. For a time the nominee smiled and replied good humoredly, but when he was plainly being worsted by his opponent, this was his manly retort: You and your kind and Lodge and his kind have glorified (sic) in the sickness of President Wilson. You and your kind ought to be ashamed of yourselves. The cheapest politician could not have been cheaper. When the most distinguished candidates in the Democratic party resort to the baby act the inevitable conclusion is that they have not a mans cause to defend." A' cartoon that would show Mr. Welling and Mr. Cox hiding behind the presidents sick bed would appropriately characterize tfofcir resort to a cravens defense. DRESS VP the old car. SUGAR AND SOUR GRAPES i because A critic who complains of the editorial in which we deprecated unreasoning. and prejudiced attacks on the great sugar industry of the state declares that the beet growers represent only four or five per cent of the people of the state. We thank our correspondent for the figures because they are illuminating. An industry which brings prosperity to 22,500 of Utahs inhabitants is not an industry that should be ruined by prejudice. In the years just ahead of us that industry, will support many more thousands of our inhabitants unless it is wrecked by being compelled to sell below the market price. Our. critic must not lose sight of the fact that each industry represents a certain proportion of the people of the state and that all of these proportions added together make a hundred per cent. The people of Utah, without exception, were delighted when the government established an arbitrary price of a dollar for every ounce of silver. At that time silver was selling far below, a dollar an ounce, but the government, in order to help the great industry, fixed an artificial high price. It gave protection at a time when protection was needed and deserves only gratitude for what it did. There was a time when the Utah sugar industry was not so it is now. It passed through many years of vicissitude. prosperous There were ups and downs and many times it looked as if the industry might fail. But the pioneers in the business, the most respected men in the state, stood by it and gradually made it a success. The result was great prosperity to an increasing number of Utah people until now, as our correspondent says, perhaps five per cent of the people of the state are supported by the industry. As soon as it began to thrive the industry began to lift mortgages from hundreds and thousands of homes in Utah. From worse than poverty many of our citizens were lifted to affluence. Take it all in all, they have prospered more than the industry, for they have made money over a greater number of years than the sugar companies themselves. For the companies there have been fat years and lean years and there will be lean years again. Unless the sugar industry is able to balance the fat years against the lean years it cannot succeed, and if it goes down to failure it will carry thousands of our citizens with it. only the richest, purest I I pasteurized cream is used in its production.
