Show RECOVERY TIMES OUR ROADS Thanks to a rainy spring, we’ ve been able to continue grading the roads. After receiving several calls concerning problems with grading, I would like to clarify the grading procedure John Blake, our Road Supervisor, is following whenever possible. We are gradingin the spring and fall only, when natural moisture is available. The first grader pass usually will bring up rocks and loose dirt, often from the bar ditches as these are being cleaned out. John is also trying to give the roads a more substantial crown which will help drain the roads, thus keeping the surface drier and less susceptible to erosion. Once the road has been graded, vehicular traffic is necessary to repack the new surface. When the road has been sufficiently packed down, the road receives a second grading. This one is designed to remove surface rocks and give a final shaping to the crown. The second grading is usually a fine grading as opposed to the heavier treatment the road first receives. As we are unable to control weather conditions, or, sometimes, the reliability of our grader, we are not always able to follow the above procedure. This has been the case with Cliff View. The latter received an extra grading last week in preparation for gravelling. Unfortunately, we were hit with a rain storm the following day, causing ridges and ruts from the passing cars. John’s intention was to do a light grading to remove the ruts. Unfortunately, the road grader has broken down with potential transmission problems. He will be looking into those this week. A reminder for those who are interested: the road committee meets every month to review the budget, - MAY 15, 1995 - SHOULD THE TOWN/POA PURCHASE LOT #3? AS OUR WORLD TURNS The “Llama lot” next to the Community Lot is presently up for sale. If one considers the long term Summer needs of this community, the purchase of this lot would be a high priority. With the LDS Church on one side, and the existing Community Lot on the other, this property would be a consistent extension of community functions. Conversely, it wouldn’t be the best of residential lots. I called the Community Impact Board to see if acquiring property for community purposes was something for which they give grants or low interest loans. They said that was definitely the case. . The present community lot (#2) is a long narrow lot that is hard to arrange many buildings on. For instance, there has been much favorable discussion about moving the CV firestation over into the community. A firestation would take up a great deal of the present lot. What do you think about the community trying to acquire Lot #3? Since we can’t afford to do anything without help from CIB grants or loans, nothing is going to happen soon. But we should start talking about the advantages and disadvantages. CIB applications are only considered 3 times a year, and the next hearing is in September. —James Russell Lowell Excerpted from Old Farmer’s Almanac -—Jennifer Redding Jack Campbell Castle Valley Inn discuss mainentance and plan road projects.
