Show PLANTING TIMES MY RESPONSIBILITIES AS A CITIZEN Being a responsible citizen means being part of, and contributing to, your country, state, town, and community. It means being aware of what's going on around you and becoming involved in these happenings. I believe there are four basic principles of being a good citizen. The first is treating my environment with respect. I must always be aware of nature and not limit my thoughtfulness to humans. There are many more animals in the world than humans and without them we could never survive so we must protect them. There are also plants. Plants make the world beautiful and in fact hold it together. We need them to hold the soil in place and to produce oxygen which is essential to life. They also contribute greatly to our food supply, giving us nuts, fruits, and a huge variety of vegetables. One of the ways I can help protect them is by recycling. The second principle is obeying the laws that our country has established. There are many ways to accomplish this. Saying no to drugs and alcohol is one major way of doing this. I should never steal, vandalize, or destroy anything that belongs in whole or in part to another person or group of people, whether it be big orsmall. I should be honest and fair in school and out. By acting in this manner I will become a more trust- worthy person. I am also responsible for reporting any infractions of the law to an appropriate authority. The third is respecting other people and their property, their rights ' and feelings. This means being aware of other people and their possessions and not damaging them in any way. I need to recognize peoples rights and feelings, and they need to recognize mine. I also need to realize thatI have the same feelings and the same rights that they do. I should stick up for those rights. The fourth principle is having opinions about happenings and acting upon them. This includes getting involved in politics and/or community activities, helping to make your community a better place, and supporting other people who are doing some of these things. I think everyone should get involved in something to make their town a better place no matter what age they are. The things might be little at first but they will grow with age and ability. This is what being a responsible citizen means to me. Mara Ginnane, 7th Grade paper PLANTING, From page I quickly as exposure to air, wind and sun, may kill a seedling in 15—20 seconds. Tamp close to the stem or trunk to get the air pockets that can kill your tree no matter how much other care you give it. It is also wise to check your plants after the first couple of waterings.
