SUWA Requests Funding for Monument Planning Following the designation of the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument, the Department of the Interior handed over $200,000 to Kane County to facilitate their participation in the monument management planning process. Garfield County was slated to receive half of that money but local county commissioner rejected the offer calling it "blood money." SUWA submitted a petition for federal funding to facilitate our participation in the democratic planning process but we have still yet to receive a response. Our petition follows: Strings-Attache- d BOG EC'S Grill House The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) hereby petitions the U.S. Department of the Interior for federal funding to subsidize our participation in the democratic planning process for the American Western Food Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument. WE Rationale Behind for Our Request VALENTINE'S DAY RE-OPE- N We understand that Utah Congressional Representatives have secured funding for the purpose Utah rural involvement the in of subsidizing county management planning process for the new Have I ever told national monument; in this case, apparently Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) payments are not enough. It is our understanding that Kane and Garfield counties have secured $100j000 each to subsidize their participation in this process. Kane and Garfield counties currently receive additional subsidies from the federal government in the form of. below cost grazing fees on BIM and national forest lands; wad price support payments; payments associated with the Farm Bill; and PILT (to name just a few). The PILT payments alone exceed $450fl00 for the two counties on an annual basis. In contrast, SUWA receives no grants, nor financial aid of any kind from the federal government. Given that Kane and Garfield county budgets significantly exceed (by three times, in fact) the nominal financial resources of our organization, and given that our membership is these than the counties (2.4 times larger, in fact), we believe there population of significantly larger is more than adequate rationale behind the federal government subsidizing our participation in the Flatterer. you? We are requesting lids amount because our membership of 22,000 nationwide is 2.4 times larger than the populations in Garfield and Kane counties who have secured the S2D0J000 for their participation in the planning process. As it stands, the per capita budget of Kane and Garfield counties is more than six times the SUWA per member budget.
