Your letter became separated from the picture because I am one of the most disorganized human beings on the planet (Except for Bob Greenspan). Thank you. It seems like only yesterday that I was whining about the exceedingly hot weather and how, for the first time in years, I was looking forward to the winter months. Well, the thermometer outside my window says 38 degrees at four o'clock in the afternoon, some 65 degrees less than the same thermometer read at the same time, just a few short months ago. As long as it doesn't get any colder, I refuse to complain. Besides there is so much going on in town to keep me warm. Or, to be more precise.. .hot In the last week, here is what I've heard from a variety of "reliable sources" about new growth in Moab...the Boom Town Rumor Mill Dairy Queen is breaking ground on a lot south of town near the Lema Trading Company. Wendy's will, at long last, begin construction on its restaurant at Main & 200 North. Arby's will occupy part of the old City Market building. Denny's and a Rodeway Inn will be built on all that useless vacant ground below Mi Vida. Kentucky Fried Chicken will build near J.B.'s, and a Burger King is looking for a suitable site to cook those tasty Whoppers. This past year has not been a banner year for most restaurants in Moab. While tourist visitation has remained about even with 1993, more new restaurants and fewer movie productions led to a smaller share of the restaurant dollar for everyone. What effect this rumored d restaurants will have an businesses already struggling to stay afloat expansion of restaurants? remains to be seen. But how could it possibly be good, particularly for locally-owne- d From Zeke, and fhe entire Francis Family.. Yed like to wish you all a very Alcrry Christmas. fast-foo- There was a letter in the Feedback section of the paper last summer, from a man named John Swift. He observed that we would never be another Telluride; something like Gatlinburg, Tennessee or Estes Park, Colorado was a lot closer to home As more time passes; as more fast-fojoints and molds clutter the approaches to Moab, Mr. Swift sounds more and more like a prophet We're not cute enough to be another Telluride; but we're losing any local charm that ever made us distinctive, buried beneath tacky Golden Arches and Grand 9am Breakfasts. I think my headache is coming bade. od And finally. I'd like to introduce a new column this month. Or, welL.a new.. something. We're not sure what exactly has occurred on page 10. But you'll find one of Moab's Most Beloved Figures, Mike Maroon ey, at that location with a few twisted thoughts and placed, at his insistence, under the label The Dark Side. This is all good news!
