Too many elections provide too many opportunities for citizens to get upset with one another over politics (besides, elections cost tax dollars). If ,we don't give our elected officials enough rope to hang themselves, we'll never know which ones should be strung up. However, for this election, voters should cast their ballots based on the issues and the candidates, not on the propriety of the recall law. What have these County Council members done to deserve an abbreviated first term? They killed the Book Cliffs Road. If you conclude that decision was a blunder, you should vote for the recall. If you're upset about rising property taxes and you conclude these County Council members are responsible, you should vote for the recall. If you conclude the Council is hostile to economic growth, you should vote for the recall. I haven't reached these conclusions, however. I was not persuaded the Book Cliffs Road would have been worth its cost. 1 1 ere in Moab, we don't need more semis blowing through town to improve our economy or our quality of life. Peter Haney's recent vote on the proposed sales tax for Allen Memorial I lospital demonstrated he has the right attitude about taxes. The issue is the most troublesome. As a general rule, government ought to let markets work. Stated another way, individuals should be free to do what they wish with their lives and their property.
