So I look forward to receiving the Zephyr at the end of the month. I find the articles very Informative, sometimes hilarious and sometimes sad, but It all makes for good reading. Margot stated that twenty percent of our graduates take the A.C.T. exam. The statistics stated by me In the October Issue referred to average scores generated by our students and not numbers of students who took the exam. Last year 40 of 72 students took the exam. This year for the first round of testing (we give the exam 3 times a year) 35 of 70 will take IL Most of our graduates go to college or vocational school. I concur with Ms. Early that standardized exams do not provide an accurate measure of student skill. The point Margot was making Is students have a difficult time with writing and she is correcL Our English teachers are addressing that problem. Nationally, teachers are trying to correct the problem by having students write more at all levels. Spelling In particular has been poor. Proper use of grammar Is also a problem. Our focus at this time Is to get students to do more writing In their I Thank you. Margie Woodruff Dear Mr. Stiles: enjoyed your Wilderness article In the November Zeohvr. but you left out one wilderness Is necessary for wildlife, too. I view the national parks, forests, point and recreation areas as "people" places where humans can satisfy their resource and recreation needs. I see wilderness areas as belonging to wildlife. Obviously there Is not yet enough wilderness, given the number of endangered species. We dont have to give up much to return some of the land weve taken from wildlife. Our brains have developed methods to help us live leanly and efficiently, but desire to act In the Interest of wildlife must come from the heart. Hopefully, we will learn to value wilderness In terms other than direct benefits to ourselves. I Jeff Foster Grand Junction, Colorado This Is an open letter to Joe Stocks and the newly elected members of your fair cities' administration. J.S. To say that environmentalists are not concerned with human suffering Is to miss the whole point of the environmental movemenL We are, though, concerned with fill life on this planet, and we realize this Important fact: that extinction can occur from both The quickest way to stop and food. But to send the long term solution Is to first stabilize hunger Is, of course, birth and then, through control, reduce the gawdawful number of people on this little ol' planeL To the members of your city administration, I have this offer to make: I can show you what always happens with the growth of a city. Do you want to see once beautiful canyons that now carry 50,000 cars per day? Do you want to see vertical walled gorges with 20 foot waterfalls that are now covered with graffiti and littered with beer bottles? Do you want to breathe air that you can see? I agree that a teacher cannot coerce a student to learn, but It's a teacher's greatest challenge and greatest contribution to Inspire a student to learn. No one can hope to be self reliant until they have faith In themselves. To the Editor: ion I stand by my statements that we have a SOLID program In all academic areas. The problems arise when there Is a lack of motivation to learn. Our curriculum provides courses that require writing. Many students avoid the courses because of the hard work required. Teachers can't coerce a student to learn. One of our student outcomes Is to Instill In our students the Idea they are responsible for their own learning. will be the ones succeeding In the future. Ms. Early Issued forth with a challenge to my Junior and senior students that Is unrealistic. I doubt Thoreau, Milton, Shakespeare, Abbey, or Early would publish their writing after the first draft. Writing Is a process. It takes a lot of effort to arrive at a final product whether It be a paragraph or a book. Mr. Stiles and I have already discussed the Idea of publishing some student writing. I eagerly await his Invitation. Tom Martin, G.C.H.S. Principal P.S. I've really enjoyed hearing the spectrum of opinions expressed In the Zeohvr. even when I don't agree with them.
