Show THE ZEPHYRJAN-FE- B PAGE 3 1995 rule around here. In other parts of the West, we sometimes read of the landowner, the rancher, or the small rural community itself, which, when offered the chance of big money in exchange for its peaceful way of life, chose to reject the riches for the quiet world they knew and loved. 1 never see that happen in this town. And the Moabites who have lived here the seem don't longest any less eager to sign away their lives, their history, and the heritage of their community on the dotted line than the new arrivals who showed up with dollar signs in their eyes. Is there anything in this town that's NOT for sale? Is there a single piece of private property in Grand County that is worth more than the price it will bring in today's real estate market? And that's not a rhetorical question. 1 want to know. Is there anyone out there with a beautiful piece of land who would pass up a bundle of bucks if they knew their property would be developed beyond recognition? If you're out there, call me. I'd like to shake your hand. And to Bart, Dale, and Ray. Moab and Grand County is dangerously on its way to losing any identity as a community. When we are nothing but a commercial strip from the San Juan County line to the Colorado River, filled with nothing but businesses that cater exdusively to people who don't even live here, then we will no longer be a community. We'll be nothing more than a population center.. town with no soul or identity. What makes this a 'lame issue is that the future may already be out of the new council's hands. But I hope they give it a try. BotCVSR 1806 Moab, UT 84582 (801)259-729- 6 CONTRACTING Here's one that sneaked right by me, but an eagle-eye- d friend spotted this little morsel and passed it along to me. On the December 7, 1994 legal notices page of the two public notices by the Office of School & Institutional Trust Lands Administration announced the salelease of two parcels of land. One is 560 acres, the other in San Juan County of 25 acres. The notice provides a legal description of the location (Township, Range, Section), but no geographical description. The fact is, the 560 acre parcel sits on Highway 128, just beyond Colin Fryer's ranch. Prime commercial property. And the 25 acre site in San Juan County is rumored to be the future headquarters of one of the helicopter companies that tried to make a go of it here last year. What a difference a county line makes. Times-Independe- What else is lame? I think it's lame that the City of Moab is sending out disconnect notices, just nine days after the due date. I've been paying my water bill on the first of the month for ten years now. The bill always falls due on the 15th. So sometimes I'm two weeks early and sometimes I'm two weeks late. And I know there are many other responsible, tax paying citizens out there who do the same thing. So it's pretty annoying to be treated like a deadbeat, when, in fact, we're simply on a different pay schedule. How much does it cost to send out these disconnect harassment notices? Is it really worth the time and the postage? And is it worth the loss of good will between the city government and its citizens to send out these aggravating paper threats? Come on, Moab Gty, lighten up. And finally, those bright lights on the NTS building in Spanish Valley. Last month, we printed the address of the company that actually owns the building and quite a few residents apparently wrote letters of complaint. But the owner says he built the building to CSA specs and it's not his fault. Talk about a bouncing ball. It is the gut feeling of this newspaper, however, that if you Spanish Valley residents keep annoying the owner and the Park Service, eventually you will get satisfaction. And it always does my heart good to see someone besides myself being annoying. And once again, that is it. Just to remind everyone, we do not print a February issue. The next time we go to press is March 1. Which means that subscribers can expect to receive their next Zephyr in And to local if some occurred event in the ten days before New Year's Day and readers, startling you can't understand why we didn't cover the story, it's because we printed this paper the week before Christmas, making this edition not only lame but stale as well. Lame, stale, and proud of it. To all our readers, thank you again for your support, your patience, and especially your sense of humor. In the meantime, we'll try to maintain one as well.
