Show This is the Letter of the Month. Dear Jim, I have been reading the various opinions on the new monument I have mixed feelings about the monument. I won't go into that. That's an old football that is just about out of air. The one opinion that is the most curious is the "piece" by Hank Rutter. I can't figure out if he just hates Bill Clinton or actually is so unpatriotic as to wish all of his fellow Americans and his government ill wilL Would Hank truly rather see a foreign company receive benefit from our national resources than California? I'll bet there are a lot of California Republicans who wouldn't buy into that Hell, there are probably very few people in general who are willing to repay a foreign company for any domestic political action. He seems willing to hurt the as well as the elitist wilderness mongers. environmentally-challenge- d Hank says he hopes Andalex will "win big" in a law suit against the Federal government Did Hank forget Federal money actually comes from us, the taxpayer? Does Hank truly believe countries like the Philippines or Japan deserve to have a Dutch-owne- d company start stripping American resources and yet refuse the U.S.A. equal trade status, not to mention strategic military privileges that we have enjoyed in the past? Maybe a better question is whether the American taxpayer deserves to have these countries and companies take the resources we may need some day? Did I lank forget, whether he likes it or not, the land in question actually belongs to every last man, woman and child in the United States? Does Ilank really believe that everyone in the country should be punished for an action he disagrees with because Bill Clinton won an election? 1 lank describes Bill Clinton as acting out of some sort of immoral political shrewdness, hidden political agendas and arrogance. Hank is probably right this time. All politicians arc accused of acting that way. If the decision by Bill Clinton to create the monument was done to win votes, and it gamers enough votes to win an election, that is how the system works. Our system is supposed to elect people who do what the voting majority desires. GRAND COUNTY is a perfect example. If there was an issue that flank and a majority of the voting electorate felt strongly about, that Bill Clinton or any other politician didn't support, the accusations would also be about hidden political agendas, arrogance, and who know what else. We used to believe we Americans were unique. We used to believe we understood the people we considered our political opposites even if we disagreed with them. I used to believe that the same philosophy working together for one gpal that won the big wars and put a man on the moon would become the national mission statement. Instead, we continue to witness actions and hear rhetoric that furthers and most often escalates the discourse of the people involved. Things are so out of hand, I actually have heard Democrats defending the FBI, seemingly because the Republicans took the accusatoiy side of an argument. I can hear J. Edgar twisting right now. Timothy McVeigh's alleged bomb killed 169 American men, women and children. A boy is gunned down by Federal marshals in Idaho. In Israel, a leader striving for peace was gunned down by a fellow countryman who wanted war with the Palestinians, people that are probably truly from the very same gene pool as the Israelis. In Iraq, Saddam, who strives to create death and destruction, is still being praised for his actions. We have not left that behavior behind us; we are surrounded by it We have met the enemy and, truly, he is us. In his last sentence. Hank uses the term "hardball" and predicts we UTAH could hurt EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE COUNTRY as bad as they hurt us. them, the Feds-i.- e., Excuse me! Rhetoric making enemies of each other over something as trivial as cheap political gains must be harmful to all of us. Is it really consdonable to create domestic enemies that are beginning to rival that of ArabIsraeli conflict. The majority of the people who live in this country don't know how much they may be hated by "Westerners." Most people don't believe that they are stealing land from the people out west Americans have been taught since grade school that public land is everybody's land, to have input on regarding use and protections. Heady from the charged mist, I'm pondering the potential of the human race, and, given that I'm not hearing or seeing anything that reflects its presence, I'm inclined to feel a little warmth in the regard. An inevitable wisp of gasoline rises on that same mist, and if one were to peer over the edge of the cliff, he could witness a finger of the flood of Humanity as it curls up the and canyon to white sand beaches and picnic tables.
