Show There are many issues involved and some yet to be resolved. This would include matters pertaining to water and sewer facilities, power lines, transportation of students, and the use of the existing cafeteria and gym at the elementary school It is tragic, in a way, that it took court action to move the school board. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, over decades, have been expended by the school district to fight against its responsibility to place a school at Navajo Mountain and to provide proper education for Native American children. But still, this was a great and pleasant surprise. It's been a long time coming. It seemed a repeat of years past when it also took judicial action to force the district to build high schools at Montezuma Creek and Monument Valley. Even though I noted some consternation among some board members, I applaud their decision to enter into die consent agreement It is an invigorating new start A bond election, as agreed to, will be held in May 1997 to augment the $2 million appropriation appropriated by the Utah Legislature. If the bond issue isn't passed - then most probably the case will return to the court Hopefully, we may now march forward to solve other complex problems concerning the education of Native American youth of San Juan County. Now is the time to build additional schools in the reservation. An elementary school is still lacking at Monument Valley. Planning must begin immediately.
