FINE WOOD up in smoke in courthouse fires through the years. Theoretically, starting with four grandparents, a family tree could be traced 20 generations or to about the year 1300, turning up some one million ancestors. Shaking skeletons from a family tree can result in surprising fallout: a great-greuncle hanged as a horse thief, an 18th century proven and properly burned witch, or other notables. Depending on family aspirations, their discovery may be greeted with despair or delight. that provide cooling also provide heating. This means lower installed cost to you compared with using two one for separate systems cooling and one for heating. The air, whether warmed or cooled, is distributed by a central system and circulated through ductwork into every room. Electric heaters are usually added to provide supplemental heat in very cold weather and are automatic-- . ally controlled. A separately mounted, low-volta- heating-coolin- g thermostat controls the operation of the heat pump. This thermostat senses the need for heating or cooling and switches back and forth automatically, according to the temperature inside your house. When it comes to saving g energy this system uses energy so efficiently that on the heating cycle it supplies 1.5 to 2 times as much heat per kilowatt as ordinary heaters. That is, the unit produces more units of heat for each unit of electricity needed to operate it, thus saving both money and energy. What you buy, and pay for, are kilowatt hours of electricity. So the more heat you get fen each kilowatt hour comfort-conditionin- the less it costs you to warm your home. And because it delivers more units of heat for each unit of electricity, the heat pump helps conserve critical fuels. The idea behind the heat pump goes back to 1852 when Lord Kelvin, (a Scottish physicist and inventor best known for his work in the applied field of electricity) used a compressor as a "warming engine and as a means of heating buildings to replace equipment for direct burning of fuels. Several working models were built but the heat pump remained primarily an idea until production of the pilot models in the 1930s. These pilot models led to field testing of experimental models in the 1940s and then to the introduction of the heat pump to certain areas of the country in the early 1950s. In recent years the use of the heat pump in homes and commercial buildings has from some grown rapidly 65,000 residential in 1956 to 122,600 installed last year. The increase in the commercial market has also been large. Properly installed and maintained an electric heat pump will provide all the comfort you need all through the year and will help conserve natural resources. There is one device the heat pump that accomplishes both these requirements, providing maximum heating comfort in the winter and cooling in the summer and at the same time saving energy. When heating a home the heat pump takes the heat from the outside air and pumps it into the house. For cooling the unit does just the reverse it removes the heat from the inside air and pumps it outside, just like any air conditioner.
