' the communities of the country set aside a day in honor of good health, so Miss McCracken asked the city if the school and the community couldn't join in a celebration to climax her drive for good teeth and to note the health day as asked by the President. It was a natural for Smith-fiel- d because every parent of every student in Summit school had become involved in the good teeth project and they found the celebration a ' good climax. Since this is the 50th anniversary of the first Health Day we thought it might be fun to hear from a few citizens who remember those early celebrations. Did the school purchase the ropes for all of us? Did our parents buy them? Ill probably never know for sure but I believe we all had one just alike. The important thing, however, was not the jump rope, it was the exercise to make one healthy. We remember huge tooth brushes carried by another class. The first time, Marian recalls, they were examined by a doctor before they could reign as Health Day royalty! The next time Sister Bain, who was a practical nurse, checked us. I remember as a first' grader my class was to portray good health through rest. We were all dressed in long night gowns and carried a candle to light the way to bed. We marched in the parade in costumes from the Health pageant presented the night before. In the second grade we were to demonstrate that CARRIE OLSON JENSEN and her sister CORA were both teachers that first year. "I had just returned from the mission field to teach again that year. It was quite a shock when we all got together and planned that affair. It was a new experience." She recalls a table in her classroom which became a work table where Crusader Capes and Caps were cut out. Elvina Jenson Ranzenber-ge- r recalls one early Health Day when the Governor of the Slate came to the celebration. We had a dinner after the parade and patriotic meeting. He was guest of honor of city officials and teachers. The flag was made a lot of in those celebrations, Elvina stated. Everyone showed respect for the flag and we need to return to .LARSEN COOPER remembers as a teacher how Dr. Jarvis, the local dentist came to the school every Wednesday afternoon on his day off to examine the teeth of the students. If they were okay he issued an okay slip on the spot. If not he would tell what needed to be done and it was recorded for follow up work. Both Mrs. Cooper and ELVINA JENSON recall that teachers sometimes paid for their students to have teeth fixed if families could not afford to do so. As a student in the first grade MARIAN WEEKS BISCHOFF remembers how excited the boys and girls were to carry the banners which declared 100 per cent okay teeth. It was the culmination of a whole years work. By the time she was a sixth grader they had a Health Queen, a knight, and attendants. She was chosen one of the attendants. An unusual thing happened three years later when in the ninth grade, the same girls were chosen again. This must have been when the queen was changed from sixth grade girls to ninth. LAWRENCE Miss peas and beans to make one healthy. There were always rows and rows of upper grade students wearing Crusader Capes and hats and the little kids couldnt wait their turn to wear them. The parade abandoned its formal march as it turned off Main Street onto the public square where everyone received refreshments. They were nearly always dairy products of one kind or another. And then to the concessions which for many years were set up west of Summit School where the playground area is today. Some years Center Street was blocked and the ferns d wheel and sparkled and turned between the two schools as the music of the carousel could be heard for blocks around.
