Show TENNESSEE centennial DURING the past week governor wells appointed the fo following lowing distinguished gentlemen commissi commissioners ion to represent the negro race of utah at the tennessee centennial which is to be held at nashville next may hon W W taylor hon P W nelson hon P H robinson hon P C howells hon P W jackson judge R B johnson and rev matthew jones heretofore we have not had bad any occasion whatever to criticise criticism critic ise any of the governors appointments because all the gentlemen whom he has selected in the past have proven themselves to be first class in every respect but it is our honest opinion that his excellency i e the governor made a grievous mistake when he chose the ex dog catcher to act as the leading representative of our race during the continuance of the exposition we presume that the governor was not aware of the fact that one hundred and twenty five of our best colored citizens absolutely refused to vote or to work for the would be leader simply because they did not want the ex dog runner to represent them in the state legislature nor in any other capacity in view of the fact that the selection of the brazen faced statesman is so very distasteful to all classes of our best beat citizens we therefore request the governor to revoke the big dictators commis sion sion we believe that our good governor made the greatest mistake of his life when he appointed the hon P W nelson to represent the people of our oar great commonwealth at the aforementioned afore mentioned exposition because it is a well known fact that president nelson spends the greater portion of his time in drinking five cent whisky we are not in favor of allowing anyone to serve in blat position be he black or white who is always willing wiffing and ready to sell his birthright for a mess of pottage we will not say anything ag against ainest the rev M jones because he has only resided in our beautiful city about four weeks but inasmuch as the reverend does not pay any poll or dog taxes we believe that he should be willing to stand aside and allow one of our older citizens to serve in his place in our opinion S D chambers esq of mill creek is the only member of our race am r who is thoroughly qualified to represent our state at nashville mr chambers is one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens and he has been engaged in farming on his own hook for a great many years year and we feel confident that it if the governor had only appointed this gentleman that he would have done more real work for utah than all of the other negro commissioners ners combined mr chambers was hayri paying ng tax taxes es and shouting for utah while one or two of these gentlemen were engaged in picking cofton down in louisiana and while several of them were driving mule mole teams team in tennessee and andin in old kentucky |
