' r editorials ' ' b r t Faculty smash seniors 75-5- 4 to end tradition .vi 'vC? v by Mark Ashworth It was a very dark day in the Final activities need support life of a senior March 8, when the faculty overgraying whelmed Hie Senior team in a 4 ' basketball tilt. The Faculty, led by Coach Wallace Montague, was ready to play ball; and from the first tip, the elders proved superior. Stretch Pinegar was high old man in the game, with a remarkable 28 points. Shooting from every conceivable position known to man, Brother Pinegar overwhelmed any contending Senior. Baby Face Del Williams, for the Faculty, was second in line with 16 points. In one successful basket, Williams made a shot that was a reflected ball off his hands. To the delight of the jeering spectators, Williams slap shot was a success. Top man for the Seniors was Clint Williams. Clint was very strong from the outside, and kept Participation in school affairs, particularly dances, has been at low tide in recent weeks. Though the Senior Ball was a good dance, it was at- by a relatively small crowd. The sophomore-sponsore- d Sweethearts Ball also had a small percentage of the studentbody in attendance. The major dance of the year the Junior Prom is coming up on April 19. It will be the last Prom in the history of the school, and it would be hoped that it could be one of the best dances in the history of the school. The success of the dance depends upon the students. The dance isnt just for juniors; it is for the faculty, alumni, the seniors, juniors, and sophomores. Lets make the last Junior Prom the best Junior Prom. 75-5- tended T ?. .' But how does such a unit come to be? To answer questions like this, one goes directly to the source $Ir. LeMar Hendrickson. He has in the past compiled three or mjire literature units each year, besides revising and keeping up to date previous units. "The English literature program at this school follows a carefully planned schedule to improve and broaden a students mind. In the ninth grade students become acquainted with Man and his Environment, a program designed to help the student notice those things which touch his senses, objects he can see and feel . The 10th grade program is called The Individuals Search for Fulfillment. It assists the student in finding the real values in life. "The 11th grade units turn the student outward, and help him to see his place in relationship to people and the organization of society. They follow the theme of Man and Society. Mendenhall was top for the Faculty with 100 percent from the field. Of course, this doesnt take into account that he only shot once. My boys were here to play ball. They may have been a little flabby here and there, but their perfect1 conditioning was a very prominent factor in slaying the Seniors, concluded fiery Coach Montague. Scoring went as follows: Percent-wis- e, KCannon earns theme, and yet point up different facets of it. He would receive suggestions and ideas from fellow teachers, members of the BYU advisory committee, and college students who come to BY High as English participants. After writing an introduction, compiling the chosen stories, and writing a study guide, Mr. Hendrickson usually tries the unit out on his students and makes final revisions with the help of other teachers who have also tried out the units. The unit would then be sent to University Publications for printing after a final editing. The completed unit would then be sent to the Laboratory School. All literature units used in BY High English classes were prepared by teachers in this school, but these units are also used at other schools. In Cedar City High, Fredonia High, Roy High, and many other schools, some Laboratory units and ideas are used; but none of them follow added Mr. Hendrickson. superior rating Brigadier Editor Nancy Cannon, a junior, was awarded a superior rating in newswriting at the 18th Annual Sportswriters. Newswriters, and Photographers Clinic held March 8 at the University of Utah. Nancy was one of six winners participating in the newswriters section of the clinic. She received the award on the story she wrote after an interview with Dewey J. Fillis, Salt Lake City Chief of Police. The clinic was sponsored by the University of Utahs journalism department in cooperation with the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune. Approximately 200 students from 35 Utah high schools participated in the clinic. What me. worry . . . about testing? Do college students worry more than high school students about tests? Gymnast places at region meet A random opinion poll was conducted at BY High in which several dozen high school and college students revealed that people and opinions differ. A total of 45 percent of those students asked, think college students worry more about tests. Such comments as, They have more to worry about, and They Elaine Andersen, a seventh grader at BY High, placed sixth in the uneven parallel bars at the annual Junior High Gymnastics meet held at Farrer Junior High on March 9. All junior highs in the region, including a junior high in North Emery, participated in the meet, stated Miss Barbara Jensen, coach of the team. Certificates and awards were presented to outstanding gymnasts and Elaine was the only .one from BY High that received an award. The junior high girls tljat participated and the events fiiey entered were Chris Robinson, uneven parallel bars, balance beam; Karen Bradshaw, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, vaulting; Margaret Blair, uneven parallel bars, vaulting; Ann Cox, floor 4 AT rs-t- e. .!. The college students gave such comments as, I never worried about tests in high school, but now I have so much more at stake for my grades, that I worry all of the time. The second group, 35 percent of the students, think high school students worry more before tests. Reasons were given which expressed such ideas as Right now wer6 studying to get into a good college, and once were there we have made it, and We are working on acquiring good study habits; if we have them is college the tests will be easy. The remainder of those questioned, 20 percent, either didnt care or thought they would worry the samef!m both places. exercise; Sandra Christensen, balance beam.
