She was honored Feb. 23 at the WilkinsomCenter and was presented two $25 savings bonds. Janine represented BY in competition against winners from Dixon, Farrer, St. Francis, Orem, Lincoln, and Springville Junior High Schools. Her winning essay was entitled The Declaration of Independence. Requirements for the essay were that it was to be written about a great American document, preferably the Declaration of Independence, and be 1200 to 1500 words in length. Under the direction of Mrs. Faye Buttle, the following eighth grade students entered essays: Annette Larsen, Susan Sessions, Janine Lambert, Becky Smith, Linda Grow, Hali DeHart, Dale Monson, Fred L. Coach Joe Dilworth will be the track coach this year, while Perry Gillette takes over the tennis team. Coach Courtney Leishman will continue on with the baseball squad again this year. A meeting was held Wednesday for all boys interested in track under the direction of Coach Dilworth. BY High is scheduled to host both the Northern Division track meet on May 11 and the Region meet on May 13. No other meets are presently scheduled, but the coaches will meet sometime in March to schedule meets, according to the coach. BY has several returning letter-me- n in track as well as some good prospects in the sport. Among those mentioned by Coach Dilworth were Noel Zabriskie in the 880. Scott Bowen and Joel Zabriskie in the 440. Chris Laycock with the pole vault. Dave Rich on the javelin, and Rick Gunn running sprints. Others include Jim Innes on the broadjump, Conrad Teichert running the hurdles, and both Ray Valgardson and Frank Maas putting the shot. The BY High baseball team, coached by Courtney Leishman, took the Region 4 championship last year, but lost the first game to West, in the state tournament. West went on to take state. The Wildcats will be in good shape this year as many of last year's starters are returning. Some of these include Dal Olson, Larry Denham, Barry Olson, and Loren Duke. Other up and coming players include Brent Orton, Clint Williams, Bill Christiansen. Greg Faux, and Randy Remington, a transfer from Canada. One of the biggest problems Coach Leishman will face will be finding enough pitchers. Greg Faux threw a lot last year, but thats about all. Randy Remington plans to pitch a little if possible. The first game will be with American Fork here on April 5. The team has only four games scheduled this year. The tennis team will also have its first match on April 5. They will play at American Fork. The tennis squad has many first-rat- e players returning this year including John Boshard, Joe Andrus, Lynn Tolley, Roger Sheffield, and A1 Thomson. They will be coached by Perry Gillette. Allred, referee. The faculty started substituting in the second half; by the end of the third quarter, the faculty team was officially declared as the best players the seniors had. With the other team, the game changed styles completely and time outs called more often. Mr. Don Peck drove in for a layin, missed the shot, but found the wrestling mats at the end of the floor quite comfortable; apd the faculty played short handed for the next little while. It was about that time that one of his biology students yelled, Hey, Mr. Peck, how are your Carbon bonds? Mr. Louis Chatterly took scoring honors for the game with 18 points, all from the field. Mr. Lar- ry Saunders, Ray Beckham, and Brian Bergan all scored 10 points for their respective teams. Coach Perry Gillette came up with eight counters for the winners, and Rex Thomas scored six for the seniors. With all said and done, and the faculty winning the game, there is still one thing stated in the special bulletin which came out Monday that is still in question: Brother Peck lost his air . . The first day of the tournament found five BY debate teams in stiff competition. There were four rounds of regular debate before eliminations began. Five BY debate teams qualified for the fifth and last round of the first day. These were the teams of LaDawn Anderson and Ann Peterson, Rick Gunn and Alan Wilkins, Roger Sheffield and Larry Christensen. Brent Ashworth and Sid Sandberg, and Joe Andrus and Jim Holtkamp. Half the teams were eliminated after the fifth round to determine who would be involved in the final rounds. The four BY teams were all chosen for the sixth round early the next morning. Following the sixth round, the teams of Rick and Alan, and Roger and Larry were still in the running. These two teams survived through the seventh and eighth rounds. This placed BY High with Skyline High and Las Vegas High as the only schools out of 70 with two teams each in the final round. Both BY teams lost in the ninth and final round, but put up a great fight, according to Mr. Kenneth Bowthorpe, coach. While the final rounds of debate were under way, LaDawn Anderson, Tom Mitchell, and Dennis Monson represented BY in oratory. They all did very well, but none made it to the finals. In extemporaneous speaking, Sandberg, Dave Rich, and Robert Grow represented BY High. None, however, qualified for the final round. toach Bowthorpe exclaimed, After Weber, our school can expect to go a long way toward a state victory. The state speech meet will be held late in March.
