This is what Jean Tyler said after winning first place in the Home Economics Division in State Fair in September. Another BY High student, Janeen Acord. won a blue ribbon. The object of the series is to break away from the old ideas of memorizing your way through math. He is trying to teach the teachers to tell the why'' and not the just because." The length of the show is for 15 weeks, lasting until Jan. 3. The shows are on Monday at 4 10 and on Tuesdays at the same time, a of the Monday show. A second grade class from the elementarj laboratory school was used in one of his shows. They solved simple algebraic equations with the help of squares, boxes, and other objects. This class was one of eight used in the series and is taught by Mrs. June Searle. Mr. Feck, who is in his fourth year of teaching at BY and his seventh year of teaching, was chosen because he had been working at the U of U before and also was acquainted with the Uni- ersity of Illinois method. Math dropouts are everywhere because students can't memorize their way through math; therefore. they forget and drop out, Mr. Feck adds. re-ru- n 4-- H 4-- H Fair. The group was originally started by five members in the summer of 1964, following the final performance of Panorama, the well-know- n Fourth of July show. Three of them are students at BY High and all seniors: Scott Bernhard. and Lonnie Rusty Anderson, Keith. Each of them play the guitar. Scott Norton, banjo, and Thales Smith, mandolin, hail from Provo High and complete the original group. The number in the group is now nine with the addition of four ether BY High seniors. They are Mel Barry Olson, Bowen, and Alan Wilkins. Each of the additions plays the guitar except Alan who is on the bass fiddie. Most of the singing the Coachmen have done has been for BYU clubs and groups. They sang for the bakers convention held in Salt Lake City last April. Many of their engagements have been at the Oakcrest Inn in Spanish Fork. Their most spectacular engagement has been at Lagoon on Aug. 3 of this year when they gave a r program in the Patio Gardens. But Sally is very human and enjoys swimming, basketball and sewing her own clothes. A Cinderella story is the best way to describe her discovery. She was a senior last year and planned to enter college this fall when she was discovered. After she was discovered, she was for many tested and months before she was thought to be the best out of 150 girls. When asked about the bevy of boys that are in the series. Sally said that most of them werent very cute and the ones who were tended to be conceited. Her circle of friends includes Donna Paul Peterson of the Reed Show." She said, My circle of friends has changed since the show started because I am at the set from early in the morning until late in the evening, and I don't really have time for my high school friends. Through seven acshe has taken tive years in courses in cooking, sewing, home improvement, junior leadership, and civil defense. Three of her projects have won blue ribbons. Jean was a representative to the Youth Leadership Conference held last summer at Snow College. In the past two years, Jean 4-- 4-- Girls' field hockey team plays Orem Field Hockey team played against Orem last night in their first game of the season. The team is under the direction of Miss Earlene Durrant. girls' PE teacher. Members of the team are Vicki Bohn, Linda Egbert, Wendy Johnson, Michele Thurston. Kathrine Bennion, Lis Christensen, Theresa Begay, Margie Dixon. Sylvia Speares, Lana Orrock. Janice Keller, Jcris Walker, Liza Bennion. and Jenny Austin. The team has been practicing after school, and several of the PE classes are also playing. The team has several other scheduled games which will follow in the next few weeks. The team, under the direction of Coach Kenneth Bowthorpe, debated the Springville squad on one of the nationally-choselabor topics. The exact topic reads Resolved: That the federal government should adopt a program of in compulsory arbitration disputes in basic industries. Springville was thoroughly beaten by the end of the third round.' The final tally was 23 debates won by BY against seven decisions for Springville. The BY squad consists of 10 teams.
