M - MOUNTAIN. One of our Citizens Writes of It? Wonder ful Wealth. Thinking a few lines about Thunder Mountain and ylclnlty might interest the readers of the News, particularly those contemplating a visit to that somewhat well known mining district, I send you a brief account of my recent trip there. , Youj correspondent has visited the mines and knows they do exist and are Letter by far than have been yet pictured out. When one sees the big mountain for which the district was named literally covered with nuggets of gold in fact a mountain of gbld for a distance of 15 miles, and all the creeks in that vicinity can be made to pay very big; when we stop and con sider the richness of these mountains, we wonder why there are so many poor people in this world. It is safe to say that thCro is enough gold there to make every man and woman In the United States rich, and thousands are new flocking here. The excitement knows no bounds. Tho stages are filed each day with gold seekers and hundreds of prairie schooners may be seen for miles and miles along the road. Both men and women are un tiertaking the task of reaching the gold fields and it is pitiful to see them. Such hardships I have never before witnessed; I saw one old man of 68 years packing a load of about 12 pounds and walking all the way with back bent low; on one foot a shoe with his toes sticking through and on the othera gunny sack. A little further on a woman was pulling a sled on which were two small children well wrapped up, but with ve'ry little food determined to reach Thunder mount- ain or die. I had cautioned the good woman to turn back but slio refused I continued my journey over the deep snow for forty more miles and I, too, suffered indescribable tortures but being an expert on suow shoes, I reached the promised land in just 30 hours. After remaining two days, returned on my trail for Mackay and after being out 17 hours met the woman and her children more dead than alive. With the aid of brandy and beef tea, I soon had them alive again and never did a human being make quicker tracks for a settlement than I did and how we went down those steep hills without an accident must surely have been th guidance of a kind providence, who doeth all things well. My long Norweigau shoes were surely inspired. At last we reached a miner's hut and there I left them la stronger and kinder hands. While of course I suffered oq the trip yet I am able to be around and will go hack to Brigham May J, but will soon return again. James M. OBrien.
