I There were two lonely, longing hearts in Reedvliie and both beat especially in unison. The possessors of the hearts were practically prisoners, beating desperately but in vain at the cruel bars of fate put up by relentless parents. Earle Rodney loved Marah Ellis and she fairly idolized him. that winter is gone, we w j have much cold weather ye1 He was twen ty and she seventeen. Their families were wealthy, but the' heads of the families were at enmity in both business and social relations. Mr. Ellis had nipped budding affections in their inciplency when he discovered that Marah had engaged herself to Earle. The father of the latter sat down upon the glowing hopes of his impressible son ponderously. Marah was kept practically a prison er in charge of a vigilant duenna, pending shipment to some isolated relative at a distance. Meantime poor Earle wandered about the extensive home grounds, He exread, smoked and grieved. pected every hour to hear tbatMs ladylove had been sent away, or to receive a mandate to begin his own irksome exile. That note told Marah to steal from the house at dusk, to reach a certain remote corner of the garden. A light rope ladder would be thrown over the wall. She would fall into her lover's arms on the other side. The prediction was that the school basket ball champions would get Hiram's (Hyrums) goat and it was made in such a manner as to give it the most publicity. It happened thusly: The Hyrum High School basket ball team was booked to meet the locals in the H. S. gym Friday evening and in as much as the home team has plowed ts way to, victory with such distressing regularity throughout the season, their fellow students determined that Hyrum should be added to the list and so they prepared a little comedy to infuse ginger into all connected with the big county Bchool A goat was secured .and a sign paints ed bearifig the word on both sides, was tied across its back. Mr. Jack Wright then rigged himself out in a policemans uniform, procured a big billie club and followed the goat which was led by a small boy, thru Main Street' and to the High School. A civil court was instituted at the High School and the basket ball team was charged with attempting to get Hyrums goat A judge and jury were impaneled and both sides of the case were represented by expert legal talent Some difficulty was experienced in making the arrest of each member of the team but Policeman Wright finally gathered all the culprits in with the aid of a big flint lock pistol, and the case was proceeded with.
