Show finish the job we were talking about the self made man mail we were wrangling about him for there were two opinions strongly held my friend pepper heppeli con tends that the self sek made roan man is the only one worth while that the others are a e all bloodless brainless sticks slicks of ct vaulty vanity worshipping wor shipping false gods he even goes so far as to say that their whole minds go to perfecting their toilettes toi tol lettes arid and their manners and their pursuit is the exhibiting of these perfect styles and exquisitely correct ways in tile the drawing rooms of society if he says you want brain and brawn morality and accomplishment the he man who does things you must find him hill among the self made he quoted a lot of names ard and seemed to have the best of the argument it is true that the man of action comes as a rule from a class of little coddling and little polish authere Bu there Is another great truth often overlooked the man of action the man who has through his own efforts the so called self made man does he not in finnely increase his power it if h he e will finish his work by polishing it in other words it if a man dresses neatly and speaks straight english and mingles easily in the world of good manners is his strength one lit bit abated Is it not rather enhanced tor for thus he speaks the language of all a classes there was once a man of exquisite polish who put on overalls and worked two years among the laboring classes in all our great cities and never once was I 1 suspected of being a gentleman he confessed and why only because a true man who Is a gentleman Is in perfect sympathy with all sorts and conditions of men it inthe incomplete man who is only atheme with one class or another and so the self made man has not completed his work until that man is polished two more thoughts it is only in our land that an important man is allowed to have bad manners an un uncultivated cul speech and the self made man should not allow himself through gh pride or resentment to be shut out from the rose garden of art and literature which is peopled with those who could give him unending pleasure |
