NATIONAL Chooso Quits Coaching A Willard couple, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon F. Watts, were winners of EDITORlAi lASpcSjlgN black or white For Thiokol Job A former star athlete at Box Elder High school, Wendell Hess, last week resigned his coaching post at Bear River High to accept a position with Thiokol Chemical corporation. Hess was literally a big man for Box Elder in 1945-46- , playing end on the 1945 state champion football squad and center for the Bees basketball team. He earned honors for both. After serving in the Army for one and a half years, Hess enrolled at Utah State University in 1948 and played center on the Aggie grid team for two years. A second Army stint during the Korean war kept him off the USU campus until 1952 when he returned to school and the football lineup. Played Under Three Coaches During his career at USU, Hess performed under three different coaches. In 1948, E. L. Dick Romney was head mentor; George Melinkovich took over coaching chores the following year and in 1952, the Brigham City athlete played under John Ronning. Hess started his coaching duties at Bear River in 1953 assisting Tuff Linford. After completing work for a degree, he became head man on the football coaching staff and since has record. compiled a respectable This year, the Bears finished seeond in Region One and gained one of their most impressive victories over Box Elder High. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Hess, 247 North Third East. ,His wife is the former Louise Turley of Brigham City. The board authorized the purchase of two manual standard typewriters to be used in the Bear River Junior High school, with the understanding that half of the cost be paid by the school as suggested by Principal Kleon Kerr. .
