Show Spanish Visitor in Brigham Gty on Fireplace Built By Lions Club Irrigation, Soil Conservation Tour A Spanish citizen this week trict soil conservationist, was gaining an impression of ted as host and guide. A community outing was held in Willard Friday at the site of the new fireplace erected by the Willard Lions club. It signaled the initial use of the fireplace which was built by the club for use by residents of Willard. Townspeople fed on hotdogs and punch and enjoyed a program, all compliments of the Lions. The brick structure cost slightly more than $1,000 to construct. Finances were derived from selling pheasant hunting permits for the Willard area each fall. The project was one of many taken on since the club was organized in 1951. Others include installation of lights for night ball games on the town square and placing of playground equipment there. The organization also has financed installation of a public iaddress system in the LDS chapel and bleachers for the baseball diamond. Later, the fundamental discovery, made at Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the Califor-ni- e Institute of Technology, that Thiokol synthetic rubber could be used as a rocket fuel, brought about the revolutionary development of the product for guided missiles and rocket motors, including three stages of the Jupiter, the Armys satellite carrier. Dr. Patrick made the discovery of synthetic rubber in his own laboratory, the Industrial Testing Laboratory, in Kansas City, Mo., in 1928, during research work on When the Thiokol Chemical Corporation was formed the following year, he became vice president and director of research. Dr. Patrick was born in Jefferson City, Mo., in 1892. His education at the Kansas City College of Medicine and Surgery was interrupted by World War I and his service in France with the Army Medical Corps. After discharge from the Army, he worked as a chemist..with Armour & Co. in the Argentine before completing his work for the medical degree. He never practised medicine, but opened his own chemical research laboratory in Kansas City. It was here that the discovery of Thiokol synthetic rubber was made.
