Show J Penney store chief to retire March 31 Charles L. Goodliffe went to work for JC Penney company June 1, 1936, and youd have to say its been a steady job for the Brigham City man. The association will come to March 31 to an end next week when the Brigham be exact City store manager officially president on two occasions, and was among founders of the Brigham City Parking company. He has been a director and vice president of the Greater Brigham City Area Chamber of Commerce and was president of the Brigham City Golf and Country club when it expanded facilities. His experience with the company has provided him with many challenges and opportunities. And also a new set of luggage, presented by 23 fellow store managers in Utah at a recent district meeting. He began his employment with JC Penney literally at the bottom, working first in the stock room in the Brigham City stbre. After a month, he was placed in charge of the notions department and his association with the local store continued until 1940 when he was transferred to Magna as assistant manager. 1 i? s A. vil Sponsored Tournaments The Goodliffe family and the local JC Penney store also have WitXCf sponsored the annualy Mickey Goodliffe Junior Memorial Golf tournament here in July. The event was named for Goodliffes wife, Mickey, who always felt we should have a junior tournament in Brigham City. She died Nov. 3, 1973. The retiring store manager n also is father of the golfing Goodliffe brothers Reid, Don and Rodney. Reid recently was appointed Augsburg, Germany with the Civil Service as a computer science engineer. Rodney who lives in Salt Lake City, plans to continue studies in chemistry at Weber State col- Career Interrupted His career with the company was interrupted on March 1, 1941, when Goodliffe was draft- ed into the Army. He was stationed in the Philippines by the following November just before the start of World War II. He was captured by the Japanese on May 12, 1942 (Mothers Day) and remained a prisoner of war until Sept. 4, 1945, when he was liberated in Ashio, Japan. After a tour of duty at Bush-ne- ll hospital in Brigham City, he rejoined the company at the Magna store on July 1, 1946. He was there until Aug. 1, 1947, when he was transferred to Sugar House. The next transfer on May 1, 1948, took him to the Provo store until February 1952 when the company named him manager at Spanish Fork. Goodliffe served there until Aug. 1, 1958, when he returned to Brigham City as store manager, a position he has held since that time.
