Show BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, December 2, 1976 Three regions for Proposed realignment of Utahs class 3-- A high schools for next school year have come in as many shapes and sizes as swimmers at a San Diego beach and the latest includes a n class with seven or eight teams in each region. If the latest measure is approved, Box Elder, Bear River and Logan would join South, Woods Cross, Davis, Ben Lomond and Ogden in Region Four. three-regio- Region Five would be comprised of Judge Memorial, Cyprus, Tooele, Murray, Uintah, Union and Carbon. Region Six would be packed with Pleasant Grove, Springville, American Fork, Payson, Spanish Fort, Cedar City, Dixie, Provo and Timpview. The latest shuffling came partially as a result of South ranks and Highs last minute request to drop into the partially due to some lobbying by Utah county schools, according to some sources close to the issue. Principal &rroQ Nichols of Box Elder High believes a f fi league would be better all around, particularly in selecting quvferfinalists for football. Nichols was also somewhat concerned that schools would be allowed but- two practice games a year in football, including one to start the season before going into league 3-- A our-regio- - 7 schools? 3-- A play. But then, that wont be any advantage to other region teams. Theyll all have the same problem, he said. Nichols said he saw advantages and disadvantages to the system, but pointed out that new proposals and behind the scenes negotiations between schools who dont Uke the proposal could bring about an entirely different make up when the Legislative Council of the Utah High Schools Activities association meets in January. With a three-regio- n would come a three region Region One would include Sky View, Weber, Bonneville, Roy, Clearfield, Layton, Viewmont and Bountiful. . 4-- 3-- A Region Two would combine East, West, Highland, Skyline, Cottonwood, Olympus and Granite. This year's version the fifth annual will be held Dec. 17 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Brigham Bowl. A celebrity squad of national, state and local dignitaries has been invited to help Max kick off this event. For those whove forgotten or havent heard, the Pin Party is Maxies way of helping needy children. Hell roll 69 games this year one for each year of his life and all proceeds taken in from those who bowl against him will be turned over to the Utah Division of Family Services, which will purchase winter coats, shoes and other clothing to distribute to blind and needy children.' five years ago about this time,' he was pondering his 65th year when he decided to do something for needy children. The idea of his Pin Party was born at that time and it has grown each year. Last year nearly $600 was donated and many young people were able to wear warm clothes, shoes without holes and coats to school as a result. Maxie foots all the bills for the event and afterwards, throws a party at the bowl for all thoee who came to bowl against him. Cost is SI a line with students and senior citixens each receiving their bowUng at half price. Those who beat Maxie will receive a gift certificate for three free lines of bowling or for merchandise from local merchants. Personnel for the local Division of Family Services office will help sign up bowlers during the day as they have in the past. Maxie said that those worried about him , 'carrying a high average into the marathon needn't worry. Old age is overtaking him fast and he says he'U be lucky to finish the 69 games this year. Maxie would like to double this years donations and has purchased a citizen's band radio and antenna unit which will be given away at a drawing about 10 p.m. Dec. 17. Tickets are SI each and can be purchased at the bowl. The winner need not be present to win. Coach Mike Madeo, in his first year at the tank helm, said the current schedule is the toughest one faced by the Bees in a long time. They have 16 outings on tap, including the Tooele Relays on Dec. 30, and a Dec. 16 meet at Cyprus, defending state championship. And as in the past several seasons, all competition will be on the road. "Its the same old story. Our pool at Box Elder Junior High school is simply too small. All other pools and Region One competition are staged in pools.. We had scheduled two home rd meets but then canceled them, the coach explained. Others are on tap. Next Thursday at 7 p.m. will be the second clinic. We want you to Bring your equipment. Present will be a binding specialist ready to answer questions on maintenance. Also, the Utah State Highway patrol will be present with a film on winter driving and car maintenance,' 'City Recreation Director Jack Winn said. "A recent survey on where to go this year with our ski buses is turning up Bear Mountain; so if you are still interested in voicing your desire to go to other places, let it be known, Winn said. I feel very strongly that our , ski buses should not always go to the same place year after year. I think its only fair to our more advance skiers that we trip over to at least one other place this season. Save your extra dollars and maybe the bus will go to your favorite place the director explained. We have an offer from one of the ski resorts to teach some "Hot Dogging if we can get there, he added. Never fear, if we have snow, well have fun. Thanks to the help of Boyd Newman and Marv this season, Bywatdr and the many ski shops and manufacturers representatives, well be ready, Winn promised. t Union, once headed for the stay in the 3-- A, is now slated to 2-- A. Is a proposed realignment for schools, placing seven or eight teams in each region the best answer? Probably not, but high schools may be saddled with the alignment anyway when the Utah High School Activities association Legislative Council meets next month. Region Four, under the proposal, would contain South, Woods Cross, Box Elder, Bear River, Logan, Davis, Ben Lomond and Ogden. Region Five would consist of Murray, Cyprus, Tooele, Judge Memorial, Uintah, Union and 3-- A Carbon. The Regtdn Six lineup would have Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Payson, Springville, Spanish Fotft, Cedar City, Dixie, Provo and Timpview. i Provo area teams apparently are pushing for the three region lineup to cut down on travel to southern Utah to once every other year in football. n A league would seem more logical, to however, everyone concerned, Box Elder, Bear River, Ben Lomond, Lagan, Ogden and Davis could form the northern most MurRegion Four with Judge, Cyprus, Tooele, two of one Cross Woods forming ray, South and central regions. The region Six slate could be Uintah, Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Provo, Timpview and four-regio- , t y Springville. A new Region Seven could be Carbon, Dixie, Cedar City, Spanish Fork and Payson. It appears 1 As the three-regio- n now, South Would lineup is proposed to have travel past Judge Memorial to play in Region Four, while Judge would bypass South to meet Murray, and so forth. v by Marge Jensen Whoever thought horse races would finish in a cloud of dust on Nov. 27? It was a fact last Saturday. The top two teams go, and although there is the possibility of ties, would eliminate the awkward selection process of three regions. There is some conjecture South could be more competitive or so school officials believe by playing with the country boys from the north, But they need to look at Davis High's track record to see that isn't any panacea for fans who want to bring home hardware from state. We had one young driver who had never taken a team out of the gates before he did it and in great style and went on to win. The success of the races is in a big part due to Bob Petersen, our gate starter. Boy, try that one on. Try to pop the gates when all 16 feet are on the ground and four heads are up plus having the drivers with a tight rein and an even tigher grip on that chariot. One driver said leaving those gates is like grabbing onto a freight train going 60 mph.
