Show Ulaii Farmers, Ranchers Meet the Bulk Thiohol Powered Rocket Will Be launched From Balloon rsy By Bernice G. Anderson Thiokol Chemical corporation has played a large part in "Operation Far Side with its Recruit rocket engine which will form the first two stages of the project. Operation Farside is scheduled to take place in September at the Pacific Proving Ground, as part of the program of the U. S. Air Force to investigate physical phenomena at extremeA balloon, ly high altitudes. the largest ever made by man, will be sent aloft to carry a four-stagrocket to a height of 20 miles from where the rocket engines will furnish the thrust to send it to an ultimate altitude of 5,000 or more miles. Highest altiture reached at present is about 500 miles. Will Carry Instruments The rocket will go up through the center of the balloon and carry instruments which will be released from it by a small explosive charge after the firing. The instruments will be returned to earth by a parachute which will open as it returns to the earths atmosphere. A small radio transmitter will measure cosmic rays which might be encountered in outer space, and will aid in tracking the instruments in their landing. - Data will be obtained on conditions in outer space and at altitudes never before reached by rockets and also on the behavior of balloons at new heights. of atmospheric Elimination friction and earth drag will enable the rocket engines to furnish more thrust and speed at high altitudes. Technicians Live Here Two technicians who played a large part in the design and development of the rocket engines, the Recruit, used in this project are Bryce Wilhite, tech nical director of the Utah Division of Thiokol who was chief engineer at Elkton Division during that time and Ralph Davis, chief designer, who was In charge of work on the designing of the Recruit engines. This project is probably the last step to moon travel, Wilhite said. Speed of the rocket will exceed 18,000 miles per s of hour, about the estimated velocity that would be necessary to leave the earth entirely. With the modern state of technology it would be feasible now to land scientific objects on the moon, and undoubtedly it will be - done within the next two years. Use Thiokol Fuel Five Thiokol Recruit rocket engines will form the first two stages of this rocket, four in the first stage for the take-of- f and one in the second. In the third and fourth stage a maximum acceleration of 200-G- s will be reached during the 26 seconds of powered flight. From the last stage the small instrument package and the burned out last' stake rocket will continue into space. The rocket is expected to become the first earth satallite or free projectile, moving in outer space. Wilhite graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering at Louisiana Polytechnic insti-tur- e and received his master of science degree in, mechanical engineering at Louisiana State university. He worked with T. A. Lucy, consulting engineering firm t at Baton Rouge, La. He served in the U. S. Air Force in 1941-4in the South Pacific, then flight testing at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, before doing flight test work on the first and jets, Bell Aircrafts Lockheeds P. A. at Edwards Air Force Base, now Muroc Flight Test Base in California. He has been with Thiokol for seven years. His interest in him for jet planes has adapted the special role he has played in rocket engine development. Glover, assistant manager of the First Security Bank of Utah. Glover represents the Utah Bankers association as Box Elder county key banker. During the year, the states banks remained the leaders in farm credit service by providing far more financial aid to farmers and stockmen than any other lending agency, Glover noted. Using figures from the 16th annual farm lending summary of the Agricultural Commission of the American Bankers association, Glover pointed out that on Jan. 1, Utah banks had a total of $35,129,000 in loans outstanding to farmers. On the same date, $12,767,000 was held in Utah farm loans by Federal Land banks, the second largest lender to the states farmers; $12,713,000 was held by insurance companies; $6,525,000 by production credit associations; and $10,418,000 by the Farmers Home administration. The total of farm credit outstanding in banks was made up of $27,240,000 in production loans and $7,889,000 in farm and ranch mortgages. In addition, Utah banks held $588,000 in C.C.C.,pa per not included in the above total. Mr. Glover noted a greater use of bank real estate credit in relation to production loans. He said that all but four of the 47 insured commercial banks in Utah served agriculture by making farm loans during 1956. t S 1 ' ,rV . : V , e K 4 f Jk 11 three-quarter- ROCKET Expected to reach an altie tude of 5,000 miles, rocket will be launched straight up through balloon, will travel at speed of 1,800 miles per hour. . I have enjoyed reading and seeing whats going on back In Brigham City and around. If you lived around here you would have headlines every day just because of this weather. Im about to roast! Its been around 102 degrees for ages, sometimes above. Thanks' again for your paper. Sincerely, E. KAY PIERCE, . 120 W. School St., Visalia, Calif.
