Show FIRST PRIMARY RESULTS ' Now that Utah's first primary election is a thing of history, voters can look back and appraise its results and benefits. Hugh Walpole was right when he said "The trouble with living in your own time is that you never know what's happened until you're dead." A week or two may not be long enough in which to correctly gauge the effects of the primary, but it is long enough to see the general result. For one thing, the primary created enough interest in Bingham Canyon to draw almost as many voters to the polls in an off-year election as the last presidential election. In 193G there were 2020 votes cast in precinct ten as compared com-pared with 1833 last week. Evidently two trips to the polls for primary and run-off balloting did not dull interest in the final voting, but on the contrary increased interest of voters. . The candidates on both sides did a great deal more campaigning, and as a result voters became more familiar with them. Differences of opinion are healthy in political matters. A strong majority is essential. Voters x;an never make round judgment of issues and candidates unless they , hear both sides. The primary campaign did not allow the people to become indifferent and the election following certainly cer-tainly gave voters the chance to study issues. The hope of this country is in two schools of political thought. The names are unimportant as long, as each is alert to pick out flaws in the program of the other. Our big government danger is from lack of interest or voting for political expediency instead of from convictions. The precinct, county ana state officials elected had the spotlight thrown on them this election long enough for voters to make accurate decisions. Those elected were truly "chosen by the people". |
