Show THE PRESS-BULLETI- N SALTON SEA IS DISAPPEARING Possibility That the Land It Has Cov-ered Will Be Soon Available for Agriculture. An inland sea which, according to geologists, has changed from sea to desert, and buck again to sea, at least fifty times since Its inception, Is one of the wonders of the Imperial valley in California. At the present time the Salton sea, which is 160 feet below the ocean's level, Is receding from its banks at the rate of approximately a mile a year. Today the sea Is 18 miles long and nine miles wide at Its widest point., In the heat of the tor-rid season the temperature In Its neighborhood Is from 10 to 20 degrees cooler than that of the surrounding country and outdoor dances are held on one of the abandoned fish-pie-left high and dry by the receding wa-ters. The Salton sea is situated in the very heart of the principal date-produci-region of America. The land left bare by the retreating wa-ters is eagerly sought by agricultur-ists, who stake their claims far out into the water In anticipation of fur-ther recessions. The soil is of adobe clay and very fertile. Mud volcanoes, miniature geysers and bubbling "paintpots" attract many tourists to the spot.' The quality of the volcanic "paintpots" is declared to rival the best European sienna and umber. Utilization of this new-foun- d color supply may soon render the con-tinuation of Europeun Imports of Buch pigment unnecessary. The Minister Never Fails You Every officer of the Government with a war message to deliver appealed to the ministers first of all. But 80$ of the ministers receive less income than government economists figure as a minimum for the support of an average family. When hospitals need money they enlist the support of the ministers and receive it But when sickness visits the minister or the members of his family they must be treated in a charity ward. His pay is less than a day laborer!. 8 out of every 10 ministers receive less than $20 a week about half the pay of a mechanic. On the opening day of the duck sea-son at Baldwin Lake, Cal., last fall, a strange craft was sighted In the of the shooting grounds. Its occupant was known to have ridden a motorcycle Id more than 150 miles of mountain and desert road, and then to have been so unfortunate as to find all the boats gone.. When he came In that night with his limit of birds, It was seen that he had made a queer but efficient duck boat out of his motorcycle side car. Wood plugs closed the bolt holes where It was removed from the frame, and a can of pitch, judiciously applied, sealed all possible leaks. Rock ballast of some sixty pounds steadied the somewhat cranky craft, and Its aided the Ingenious sportsman In securing an unusual bag of birds. So well pleased was he with the adventure that now he contem-plates constructing a real combina-tion side car and boat. RESERVOIR COMPANY WOULD APPROPRIATE MORE WATER Irrgation of 50,000 Acres Near Salt Lake Object of Project The Provo Reservoir company, by J. R. Murdock, its president, yester-day replaced a former filing on 300 second-fee- t of the waters of Utah, lake by a new filing on 500 feet, and In-creased the land to be irrigated with this water from 30,000 to 50,000 acres, immediately west of Salt Lake. It is the belief of Mr. Murdock that there are 50,000 acres in that section which are capable of being drained and turned into some or the most valu-able farm land in Utah. Its value would lie largely in the proximity to the market of Salt Lake. "We do not own an acre of land in that vicinity," Mr. Murdock said, "but we believe we can furnish this water and furnish it more cheaply than most people can. Announcement of our en-terprise, made some few weeks ago, was welcomed heartily by landowners in that region. If they will improve and drain the land, we will furnish the water." The filing contemplates pumping the water out of Utah lake into the Jor-dan river and taking it from that river by enlarging the existing North Jordan and Brighton and North Point canal systems. Have Earned Place In History. They failed to get overseas as a unit In the recent world conflict, but the famous Fort Garrys, who charged into the blue at Cambral, the Strathcona horse, the Royal Ca-nadian dragoons and the Canadian Mounted rifles were filled with rank-ers who had worn the red tunic of the old Royal Northwest Mounted Police. The police have not been empire-builder- s, but they have smoothed the road for empire and kept It smooth. Western Canada Is western Cannda today largely because of them. Though the old name under which they won fame and glory Is now num-bered with forgotten yesterdays, it will live forever In the history of the Canadian west as a symbol of effici-ency, loyalty, heroism and law fear-lessly enforced. The only response to the advertisement s a very fat and very black old woman who Beemed promising until she was asked for her references. "Deed, lioney, Ah done tore up dem references," she responded. "Destroyed your references? How unusual. Don't you realize that that must cause people to suspect that you are not a good servant?" "Tassum, maybe dat's so," the appli-cant agreed. Early this month the officials of the Hammond Canal company, an Irriga-tion project of the Bear river valley, represented by D. B. Pratt, president, and R. L. Bush, general manager, met with the water users of the Dewey-vill- Utah, district to discuss the matter of supply and distribution of water in that territory for the season of 1920. It was announced at the meeting that the reconstruction of the system was progressing as favorably as could be expected under the weather conditions, and that it was proposed .by the company to expend approximately $50,000 in repairs this season. The farmers attending the meeting expressed their pleasure and satisfaction with conditions of the water system since it came under the new management, and a general feel-ing of optimism exists as to the sugar beet crop for the coming year. Dog Answers Doorbell. There Is one dog in London which, were Its duties known, we should all Join In voting an extra ration. It Is the care of an entire household. All the humnp members of the family are deaf and dumb. The dog answers the door. That Is to say, when It hears a knock or a ring, It conveys the Information to Its betters by barks, which are detected by the opening and shutting of Its mouth, by wagging Its tall, and In the last resort by gently pawing Its mas-ter or mistress and running toward front or back door.
