With that touch which only genius gives, the skirt acquires a fluent full-ness which at the same time contrives to preserve a slender silhouette. The one-sid-e dip of the hemline and the fitted blpline are also adroitly fea-tured. A motif worked In tiny pearli and rhlnestones Is positioned at the left hlpllne where It holds the fullness of the side drape In perfect pose. So much depends on color choice, this season, for there Is genuine class distinction In tones and tints. There are the new for Instance, they aJ'e Just enough away from or-dinary white, to give an air of su-preme refinement Eggshell Is one among many new tints which are adorable. French wemen are quite taken with baby blue for evening wear. The velvet of which the classic gown In the picture Is fashioned Is In this choice color. Some very unusual effects are being achieved In modern velvet An en-chanting new velvet for the evening frock Is In a vanilla tone with an II- - luslve flower print which is only re-vealed In certain lights. For sumptu-ous evening wraps velvet with an In- - outlined with metal thread stltcbery which Is extremely effective. It Is an exceedingly deslgnful sea-son so far as fabrics are concerned. If patterned effects are not achieved In one way then they are In another. That Is, the motif may be woven Into the very woof and warp of a material or It may be painted 6r embroidered, or a method which Is outstanding is that of working Insets and seamlngs of various cloths in a way to produce startling modernistic design. Among registrants In the vogue for patterned effects, are many novelty woolen weaves with fancy Interwoven borders. These colorful borders In-spire a pretty play of Imagination on the part of the stylist whose mission It Is to use them In a trimming way. Coats, In particular, are styled of handsome bordered woolens this sea-son. A swagger cont of rayon and wool bordered cloaking ts worn by the seated figure In the picture. It Is one of those unfurred models which Is dis-tinctly patrician and which so appeals to women of discriminating taste. It has this virtue, too. It sounds a new note, being so Colorfully and so fancifully self bordered. A very clever model, also, Is" the coat shown to the left Using the sPFP i - - m SIS it 4 - "'"V I j : Wffyp' ' 'J r. t. r. r. t. r. rv I iy0", y I TWO AUTUMN COATS traduction of metal design Is much employed. Velvet ensembles for evening pre-sent a new and fascinating theme. A banana colored transparent velvet dress and wrap with a cream-tinte- d fox collar makes a pretty picture and In any other of the fashionable tones and tints It would be equally as effec-tive. Most of the wraps are styled In cape fashion. Perhaps the newest cape modes are those which stress the simple circular style with gorgeous fur collars. However, fanciful velvet cre-ations which are shirred and draped are also prominent In the formal style picture. Among formal wraps, velvet shawls are a subject of much Interest. For these huge squares of sheer velvet are bordered with hand-knotte- d fringe. They are gorgeously handpalntefl, both In modernistic patterning or with colorful floral motifs. These elab-orate' evening fantasies are In white and pastel shades, also black. the hand painted designs are i striped portion at the underarm seams has a tendency to give a slenderized silhouette. The bordered part like-wise forms verw attractive tuxedo revers down the front of the coat, j ' Many of the new woolens have very elaborate wide borders, which are col-orfully Interwoven perhaps In geo-metric patterning or as Is sometimes the case In ombre colorings which blend from Hgbt to dark. Sports coats especially are made ol these bordered woolens, some of which show very wide effects elaborated with tapestry designs, the top of the fabric being In tweed effects or showing all over Jacquard patternlngs. For dress trimmings handsome bor-ders are accomplished by seaming stripes of the material together, ushui several colors. Very attractive Jersey and light-weig- woolens are being made up In this way. Then, too, for dressier frocks borders are aeeom pitched by seaming ribbons of varloui colors together. JULIA BOTTQMLKY ' & Mil. Westers Newspaper tjnlno I ' HwfPnriilil (OS, IMt. Wester- - Niwipiptt Union.) "In a large part the insubordina-tion of servants arises from th Browing seme of unwillingness to be directed and governed by the In-dividual. "It la the apirlt of the age which rebel against the dictates of the Individual, but submits freely to the despotism of an organisation." SEASONABLE DISHES As oar seasons are so variable It Is bard to determine when summer ends and fall begins. We usually have as un-comfortably b o t days late in the season as any time during the summer. It Is not wise to re-tire all the summer dishes, for they may T t be much needed dur-ing the fall months. This year cu-cumbers seem to be especially good and abundant Try putting up some In this simple way: Cucumber and Celery Pickles. Fill quart or two-qua- glass jars with stnull sized cucumbers or If large cut them lengthwise into ' Ongcr-slze- d pieces, arrange Ave to six stalks of celery and one or two small onions In each jar; when well filled with the vegetables fill with the boiling hot vinegar, using one quart of vinegar (if very acid dilute with water), one cupful of sugar and one-hal- f cupful of salt Seal the cans and put awny for use in a week or two. Onions as well as cucumbers may be sliced. If too large to serve. Here Is a simple mustard pickle which Is especially good for those who can add the dally to the pickle. Use one gallon of vinegar, one-hal- f cupful of mustard, one cupful of salt two cupfuls of brown sugar. Mix; cold and put Into a large jar. add-ing a qnnrt or two of small cucumbers as they grow. Cover with horseradish leaves and set away. French Potato Salad. Cut a large onion Into slices and put to cook In a saucepan with two to three tablespoon-ful- s of butter. Cook until very soft In another saucepan cook four medium sized potatoes cut Into bits; while they are cooking add a little of the potato water occasionally to the onion to fin-ish cooking until tender. Mush the po-tato, add the onion and one quart of good milk, season well with salt and pepper and serve very hot This makes a nice Runner dish for a cool night. Stuffed Lettuce Hearts. Take small heads of lettuce, remove the centers and fill with chopped chicken, mush-rooms, shredded almonds and tender telery, nil moistened with a good may- - onnnlse. Serve garnished wltth a bright red strawberry. Chestnut Time. The chestnut Is one of the most popular fall nuts and Hallowren would luck most of Its charm If the favorite nut did not appear. Its delicacy of flavor blends so well with others that It Is a gen-eral favorite toasted or served In combination with other foods. As a soup, nothing could be more delicious than one of chest-nuts. Chestnut Soup. Cook a quart of chestnuts in boiling water, slip off the brown skins and drop them into cold water. Drain and add to boiling water with a small onion, three stalks of celery, a bit of bay leaf. When the nuts are tender, mush through a sieve, add white stock, a tablespoon ful of butter, salt and pepper to taste nnd one pint of hot milk. When boil Ing hot remove to the back of the stove and add two well beaten eggs nnd one-hal- f cupful of cream. Serve hot In bouillon cups. Chestnut and Apple Salad. Mix one cupful of blanched chestnuts with one cupful of celery and one cupful of diced apple, mix with mayonnaise and serve with water cress. Chestnuts with Brussels Sprouts. This Is a dish which Is considered very choice. Cook the nuts and sprouts and serve In a rich white sauce. Deviled Chestnuts. Put a teaspoon ful of olive oil Into a pan, add two cupfuls of blanched chestnuts, stir and cook until well browned,, dust with salt and cayenne and serve In nut cups. Chestnut Dessert. Prepare a custard by adding a teaspoonful Of softened gelatin and a little lemon rind to a pint of milk, twr eggs and one-lin-lf cupful of stijiar; add a pint of cooked and mashed chestnuts Pour Into a mold and chill. Serve surrounded with whipped cream. Glaced Chestnuts, Boll sugar a.-i-water until a heavy straw colored sirup results, dip blanched chestnuts In the sirup and put to drain on waxed paper. Dip again when cool. Keep the sirup hot over hot water while dipping. Keep covered from the air, or the nuts will soften. Preserved Chestnuts. Prepare a sugar sirup using two cupfuls of sugar, one of water, the Juice and rind of a lemon. Cook until thick, then strain and drop In the cooked chestnuts. Wot Oil Employed to Wipe Out Mosquitoes Hot fuel oil, sprayed along the stures of the lakes iu the Canal zone, Is a most efllcuclous wenpon against malaria-lade- n mosquitoes. This oil, a , big factor In the light which Is cul- - . mlnatlng In certain abolition of the In-sect has destroyed breeding places In the Pedro Miguel and Gatura lakes. The method used to spray the oil necessitates the use of a rowbout car--, rylng a tank containing 150 gallons of oil, and a crew of three men. One - man rows, one vorks a hand pump and the other handles the spray nos-sl- e. The hot oil Is snrayed on the shore line as fust as the boat can be , - propelled. This surface filming has been found positive and complete, - Wind action and wavelets curry the o'tl into every nook and cranny, even ' to a considerable distance from the point of application. This Is done to force the pedestrian to cross certain squares and thorough-fares only at specially marked cor-ners. The population, however, Is not exactly grateful to the authorities for thus taking care of them, for the fences smack too much of the old Prussian discipline. Not Infrequently It happens that a man who has to catch a train or who ts otherwise in a hurry Jumps a fence and thus many a sedate business man is gradually acquiring considerable athletic skill.
